NARVIK: Ascension To Apotheosis

The first thing that leaps to the eye is the changing of band name from Asgard to Narvik in 2007. This trio, hailing from German Freiburg, happens to be inspired by Robert Burâs of Madrugada who passed away way too early. He was native of Norwegian place Narvik and we have been wondering for years why the music of Madrugada did not gather more adepts in Europe. The music of Narvik has not the slightest comparisons with the one of Madrugada, yet engrossing to mention at the sideline.
This core trio is made up of Redeemer, Lupus and P. and they return with a sophomore album. From 2007 till 2014 they used to be a five-piece, but after the recordings of the EP ‘Snake Of Paradise’, Incubus and Waldfürst left the band. From that day, they work with live session musicians. Since 2015 the unholy fire lightens up again – first evidence was the EP ‘Fecundity Of Death’ – and now the time has come to continue with second full length ‘Ascension To Apotheosis’. A spiritual and mysterious concept is featured in the lyrics and will be present in next issues as well. Musically Narvik holds on to rather old school approaches in production and atmosphere, but they know how to engross the listener with innovative breaks. The shrill guitar sounds have depth, the hoarse throat of Redeemer sounds tiresome on purpose, yet intense. Dissonant leads have an important function in the compositions. They turn them into fluttering catharsises. There’s a lot of distortion on the guitars and accurate accelerations with sure-fire blastbeats. The basic production flirts with the past, but the final result will appeal to fans of Der Weg Einer Freiheit to (earlier) Darkthrone. Impressive and compelling from start to finish.

Het eerste wat onze aandacht trok was de naamsverandering van Asgard in Narvik in 2007. Dit trio uit het Duitse Freiburg blijkt namelijk geïnspireerd te zijn door Robert Burâs van Madrugada die veel te vroeg stierf. Hij was afkomstig uit het Noorse Narvik en we hebben ons altijd afgevraagd waarom de muziek van Madrugada nooit meer aanhangers in Europa kende. Niet dat de muziek van Narvik nauw aansluit bij die van de melancholische treurwilgen van Madrugada, maar toch het vermelden waard!
Het kerntrio bestaande uit Redeemer, Lupus en P. is terug met een tweede album. Vanaf 2007 tot in 2014 was het een kwintet, maar na de opnamen van de EP ‘Snake Of Paradise’ verlieten Incubus en Waldfürst de band. Vanaf toen werkt men live met sessiemuzikanten. Vanaf 2015 brandt het onheilige vuur terug op volle kracht – dat werd bewezen met de EP ‘Fecundity Of Death’ – en nu komt men op de proppen met ‘Ascension To Apotheosis’. Een spiritueel en mysterieus concept is thematisch aanwezig en zal zich ook op volgende werken manifesteren. Muzikaal houdt Narvik het vrij old school in productie en benadering, maar weet de luisteraar te boeien met innovatieve breaks. De schelle gitaren hebben diepgang, de schorre strot van Redeemer klinkt met opzet moeizaam, maar intens. Dissonante leads spelen hun rol om de composities uit te hollen tot uitwaaierende catharsissen. Veel vervorming op de gitaren en accurate versnellingen met prima blastbeats. De basische productie knipoogt naar het verleden, maar het resultaat zal fans van Der Weg Einer Freiheit en (vroegere) Darkthrone zeker bevallen. Imposant en meeslepend van begin tot einde.
