WINTERHORDE: Maestro

Is Winterhorde hailing from the Scandinavian woods? No, not at all, since this band comes from Israel (Haifa and environments) and that’s where they were formed in 2001. The progressive extreme metal earlier found its way to albums like ‘Nebula’ (Burning Star - 2006) and ‘Underwatermoon’ (Twilight - 2010).
With a seven-piece new line-up they now present ‘Maestro’; a multilayered work. The album – taking 66 minutes of your life experience – happens to be a musical journey through all sub-genres of metal. It is progressive in its frivolous twists and turns, it is fetching in its compelling choirs and choruses (‘Maestro’ the title track as main example), it includes exuberant virtuoso passages of the musicians and in addition it showcases proper heaviness in flirting with death and black metal. In brief, it happens to be an avant-garde record in extreme metal we like to embrace.
In the middle we can find ‘The Heart Of Coryphee’ as ultimate mammoth composition with its frivolous rhythms and very adventurous side-kicks. Winterhorde has two vocalists, respectively handling raucous grunts and Kamelot-alike musical clean chants. In ‘Cold’ we hear saxophone, while two songs are regaled with the bombast of female operatic vocals. It might be an overwhelming experience to fathom in the beginning, but it is quite a fine challenge for every adventurous metal fan.

Winterhorde afkomstig uit de Scandinavische wouden? Neen hoor, deze band komt uit Israël (omgeving Haïfa) en is daar in 2001 ontstaan. De progressieve extreme metal vond eerder zijn weg naar albums als ‘Nebula’ (Burning Star - 2006) en ‘Underwatermoon’ (Twilight - 2010).
Met een zevenkoppige nieuwe bezetting presenteren ze nu ‘Maestro’, een veelgelaagd werkje. Het album dat 66 minuten van je leven weg hapt, is een muzikale reis langs alle subgenres der metal. Het is progressief in zijn wulpse wendingen, het is aanstekelijk in zijn meeslepende koorzang en refreinen (‘Maestro’ de titelsong voorop), het kent uitzinnig virtuoze passages van de muzikanten en bovendien herbergt het de nodige heftigheid in flirten met death en black metal. Kortom, het is een avant-garde plaat in het extreme metalgenre zoals we ze graag omarmen.
In het midden prijkt ‘The Heart Of Coryphee’ als ultieme mammoetcompositie met zijn speelse ritmiek en uitermate avontuurlijke zijsprongetjes. Winterhorde heeft twee zangers die respectievelijk een ruwe grunt en Kamelotachtige musical cleane zang hanteren. In ‘Cold’ horen we saxofoon, terwijl een operazangeres nog een tweetal songs opsmukt met bombast. Het is allemaal veel om te verwerken, maar deze uitdagende kluif verdient nader onderzoek van elke avontuurlijke metal liefhebber.
