WÖLJAGER: Van 't Liewen Un Stiäwen

We know Marcel Dreckmann – under other moniker Skald Draugir – from Helrunar (in 2015 they released the excellent ’Niederkunfft’) and Arstidir Lifsins (operating from Iceland and amazing on ’Aldafoðr Ok Munka Dróttinn’). However, Wöljager is dedicated to his native region Münsterland in North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany and all lyrics are in the local old dialect. Marcel has always been a linguistic phenomena and that’s not different on this debut album ‘Van ’t Liewen Un Stiäwen’ (‘On Living And Dying’ in English).
Marcel wrote the story initially as a theatre play. It happened at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century and tells the story about a clairvoyant who only sees bad tidings and the struggle with his gift during his youth. He fears to loose himself in the social turmoil of his time and on top of that there is a love that cannot be. Thus a lot of drama. Consequently the music he wrote for it appears to be sombre and contemplative neo-folk, yet very beautiful. Together with Stefan Drechsler and Arni Bergur Zoëga, his friends of Arstidir Lifsins, he recorded this acoustic record. The heartfelt sung and rendered lyrics are mainly regaled with acoustic guitars, viola and string arrangements.
This album breathes a huge connection with folklore and artisan craftwork traditions, also noticeable in the artwork. ‘Van ’t Liewen Un Stiäwen’ will be exclusively released as magnificently crafted book (sixty pages) in which we find the story in different languages (modern German and English) and the lyrics in addition to the CD with the music, as well as multiple aquarelles to illustrate the lyrics. It is fascinating as well as educative and done with genuine love for the subject. When you had an open mind for earlier acoustic tinged releases on Prophecy, you will have a very satisfactory challenge in discovering all the facets of this exceptional work. As you can see, there is a lot more to cherish than music only.

Marcel Dreckmann kennen we – onder pseudoniem Skald Draugir – van Helrunar (zij brachten in 2015 nog het uitstekende ’Niederkunfft’ uit) en Arstidir Lifsins (opererend vanuit IJsland en groots op ’Aldafoðr Ok Munka Dróttinn’). Wöljager is echter gewijd aan zijn geboortestreek Münsterland in Noordrijn Westfalen (Duitsland) en alle teksten zijn dan ook in het plaatselijke oud dialect. Marcel is altijd al een linguïstisch fenomeen geweest en dat is niet anders op dit debuutalbum ‘Van ’t Liewen Un Stiäwen’ (‘On Living And Dying’ in het Engels).
Marcel schreef het verhaal als een theaterstuk. Het speelt zich af op het einde van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw en verhaalt over een ziener die alleen slechte tijdingen aankondigt en de strijd met die gave in zijn jeugd. Hij dreigt zich te verliezen in de maatschappelijke wirwar van zijn tijd en dan is er ook nog een liefde die niet mag zijn. Dramatiek dus en de muziek die hij ervoor schreef is dan ook meestal sombere en beschouwende neofolk, maar wel erg mooi. Samen met Stefan Drechsler en Arni Bergur Zoëga, zijn vrienden van Arstidir Lifsins, nam hij deze akoestische plaat op. De met hartelijke stem gezongen en voorgedragen teksten worden voornamelijk begeleid door akoestische gitaren, viool en strijkersarrangementen.
Dit album ademt een grote verbondenheid met folklore en ambachtelijke tradities, hetgeen ook te merken is in het artwork. ‘Van ’t Liewen Un Stiäwen’ komt exclusief uit als een prachtig verzorgd boek (zestig pagina’s) waarin we naast de CD met de muziek ook het verhaal in verschillende vertalingen (modern Duits en Engels) en de teksten vinden, alsook een reeks aquarellen om de teksten te illustreren. Het is zowel leerrijk als fascinerend en aangepakt met liefde voor het onderwerp. Wanneer je openstond voor eerdere akoestisch getinte releases van Prophecy, dan zal je ook een heel bevredigende kluif hebben aan het uitpluizen van dit unieke werk. Zoals je kunt merken is hier dus veel meer te ontdekken dan alleen maar muziek.
