CANDLEMASS: Death Thy Lover (EP)

Swedish inventors of epic doom metal Candlemass declared at the time of the release of ‘Psalms Of The Dead’ that it would be their latest studio album ever. The band would remain active on stage. They kept their word, since fortunately we can admire them regularly in a live situation these days. For quite some time that happens with their long time friend Mats Levén as vocalist, since Rob Lowe left the band some time ago. This is a sure-fire choice, since Mats is a superior singer we already heard in many other bands, also in Krux he is the front man.
They could not resist from writing new songs and we do applaud that! To celebrate their thirtieth anniversary, Napalm Records will release the EP ‘Death Thy Lover’ early June with four new tracks with Mats Levén behind the microphone. This gem will be available on CD, but also on vinyl in different colours. Thus collectors can go all the way if they want to, since the new songs are of such top notch quality that we challenge you to purchase this. What do we get? Well, the title track kicks off rather up-tempo with fervent guitar eruptions, dynamic riffs and the epic chants of Levén. It is a marvellous amalgamation of heaviness and pace slackening introspection where vocals get more sensitive. We think Mats Levén is a very suitable singer for Candlemass!
‘Sleeping Giant’ is a bit less accessible, but as doomy as ever. It is sung in a bit rougher manner and the guitar explosions of lead guitarist Lars Johansson are superb. One can find more refined guitar skills in between them heavy doom riffs and suddenly popping up acoustic finesse in ‘Sinister ‘n Sweet’, a top notch composition that belongs to Candlemass’s best works. They pull out all the stops! What rests us happens to be an instrumental song, ‘The Goose’ and it makes you fly high above this earthly existence on a bed of doom. It might be traditional, but still it works and sometimes we wonder why mediocre bands produce so many albums, while the top bands retreat themselves in anonymity. I guess that’s the charm of it, isn’t it?

De Zweedse uitvinders van epische doom metal Candlemass verklaarden bij het verschijnen van ‘Psalms For The Dead’ dat dit hun allerlaatste studioalbum zou worden. De band zou wel actief blijven op het live front. Daarin hielden ze woord, want we kunnen hen nog regelmatig op het podium bewonderen, gelukkig maar. Sinds geruime tijd gebeurt dat met hun trouwe vriend Mats Levén als zanger, want Rob Lowe is al een poosje uit de band verdwenen. Een puike keuze, want Mats is een superieure zanger die we al in tal van andere bands hoorden en in Krux is hij trouwens ook de frontman.
Ze konden het toch niet laten en dat juichen wij toe! Om het dertigjarige bestaan te vieren, brengt Napalm Records begin juni de EP ‘Death Thy Lover’ uit met vier nieuwe tracks waarop Mats Levén als zanger te horen is. Het kleinood verschijnt op CD, maar ook op vinyl in verschillende kleuren. Verzamelaars kunnen desgewenst weer hun hart ophalen dus, want de nieuwe songs zijn van die kwaliteit dat we jullie uitdagen om dit zeker aan te schaffen. Wat schaft die pot? Wel, het titelnummer gaat behoorlijk uptempo van start met vinnige gitaarerupties, dynamische riffs en de epische zang van Levén. Het is een knap amalgaam van stevigheid en terughoudende introspectie waarbij de zang sensitief wordt. Wij vinden Mats Levén een prima zanger voor Candlemass!
‘Sleeping Giant’ is wat ontoegankelijker, maar niet minder doom. Het is wat ruwer gezongen en de gitaarexplosies van lead gitarist Lars Johansson zijn super. We treffen hetzelfde geraffineerd spel tussen zinderende doom riffs en plots opduikende akoestische finesse in ‘Sinister ’n Sweet’, een topcompositie die niet moet onderdoen voor Candlemass’s beste werk. Alle registers worden opengetrokken! Rest ons nog een instrumentaal nummer, ‘The Goose’ welke je op een doomwijze laat zweven boven het aardse bestaan. Traditioneel misschien, maar het werkt nog steeds en soms vragen we ons wel eens af waarom middelmatige bands albums blijven uitbraken terwijl de top zich terugtrekt in anonimiteit. Maar dat zal wel juist de charme ervan zijn zeker?
