SUNS OF THYME: Cascades

These five musicians, who found each other in fascinating art-city Berlin, really amaze us with their sophomore album ‘Cascades’. In brief one could say that they present a signature, quite original, own sound blending the new wave from The Cure with the psychedelics of Hawkwind, but that would give them not enough praise. No, ‘Cascades’ happens to be an extremely atmospheric album with great vibes, one you cannot pigeonhole in one genre, but with a very fresh approach in the large number of bands inspired by music of the past.
In addition these guys are skilled in writing, recording and mixing of an album; that’s why only the mastering took place in the US (done by Brian Lucey of Magic Garden and known from his works with The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys). The evidence that the band can instantly haunt you already comes with opener ‘Do Or Die’ with its spatial sounds and innovative accents. But vocals are a direct hit as well: these are clear, kind of conjuring and powerful. Sometimes a bit of distortion is used, like in ‘Intuition Unbound’ that is relished with a sort of The Doors vibe. Yet the new wave/cold wave influences remain prevail and are prominently present. Just listen to ‘Ich Träum Von Dir’ which includes a magnificent centrepiece with drums with momentum and fluttering guitars. Melancholy is another important feature, vocals and compositions brim with it. Among the fourteen tracks, one can find several – mostly instrumental – short songs that add a special zest to create a fine floating atmosphere. Often soaring synthesizers set the tone then. The quiet ‘Rush’ reminds me a bit of The Sound, while shoegaze and Krautrock go hand in hand in the compelling ‘Schweben’. Oriental influences pop up in ‘The Field’ (with sitar and percussion) and the loosely played ‘Kirwan’. Also the resolute sung ‘Aphelion’, one of the longer tracks, deserves a special mention. This is a very strong and well-created record that spontaneously invites you to have a next spin. It promises a lot of goodwill for Suns Of Thyme in the (near) future. Another fresh approach of vintage rock is still possible!

Deze vijf muzikanten die elkaar in het inspirerende Berlijn vonden, verrassen ons op hun tweede album ‘Cascades’. Kort door de bocht zou men kunnen stellen dat ze een eigen origineel geluid presenteren met de new wave van The Cure en de psychedelica van Hawkwind, maar dan zouden we hen te weinig eer geven. Neen, ‘Cascades’ is een bijzonder sfeervol album dat niet in een enkel genre onder te brengen valt, maar een ontzettend frisse flow heeft in het grote aanbod van bands geïnspireerd door het rijke verleden.
Bovendien zijn de heren bedreven in schrijven, opnemen en mixen van een album, zodat enkel de mastering in het verre USA gebeurde (door Brian Lucey van Magic Garden, bekend van The Black Keys en Arctic Monkeys). Dat de band je meteen bij het nekvel kan grijpen bewijst opener ‘Do Or Die’ met zijn spacy geluiden en innovatieve accenten. Maar ook de zang is een voltreffer: die is helder, bezwerend en krachtig. Soms komt daar wat vervorming bij, zoals in ‘Intuition Unbound’ dat een sfeertje van The Doors meekrijgt. Toch blijven de cold wave/new wave invloeden vrij prominent aanwezig; luister maar naar ‘Ich Träum Von Dir’ dat een prachtig middenstuk heeft met stuwende percussie en uitwaaierende gitaren. Weemoed is veelal aanwezig in zang en composities. Onder de veertien tracks zijn verscheidene – veelal instrumentale – korte songs die bijdragen tot de flow en sfeerschepping. Daarin voeren zwevende synthesizers dikwijls de boventoon. Het berustende ‘Rush’ doet weer wat aan The Sound denken, terwijl shoegaze en krautrock hand in hand gaan in het begeesterende ‘Schweben’. Oosterse invloeden duiken op in ‘The Field’ (met sitar en percussie!) en het losjes uit de pols gespeelde ‘Kirwan’. Ook het kordaat gezongen ‘Aphelion’, één van de langere tracks, mag niet onvermeld blijven. Dit is een bijzonder sterke plaat die meteen uitnodigt tot een volgende luisterbeurt en nog veel goeds voor de toekomst belooft voor Suns Of Thyme. Een andere, frisse benadering van vintage rock is dus nog steeds mogelijk.
