THE ORDER OF ISRAFEL: Red Robes

Two years ago we were blown away by ’Wisdom’, the enchanting debut album of The Order Of Israfel, four musicians hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden. They play doom metal one can call traditional (Black Sabbath and Cathedral as main influences) but they relish their compelling compositions with fervent guitar skills in pure NWOBHM style (think of Thin Lizzy) and regale their songs with marvellous acoustic guitar moments. In the meantime the band did not rest on its laurels. They hit the road several times, even with Pentagram. But they also focused on writing this sophomore album called ‘Red Robes’ that continues where the predecessor ended.
Again it is a feast of enjoying their gloomy rifforama, since the guys come up with amazing twists and turns in their songs; these really leave us in awe. In the very beginning they put us on the wrong leg from a moment, with a cheerful oriental tinged tune, but soon ponderous doom riffs roll over us. The trance-inducing chants of guitarist Tom Sutton sound drawling and occult, while accelerations are invigorated with passionate guitar solos in ‘Staff In The Sand’. The solemn, slow vocals in ‘The Red Robes’ have a charming way of phrasing, a kind of ritual chants illustrate the mighty harmony vocals of the guys and there is always a melancholic undercurrent. This song winds off with acoustic guitars and after the mid-paced catchy ‘In Thrall To The Sorceress’, we hear those acoustic guitars again, adding beauty to ‘Swords To The Sky’. They have shot a video clip for ‘Von Sturmer’. This song includes the most Black Sabbath influences of them all, with a menacing spoken fragment as extra. The guitar work is exceptional and amazing, all album long. It is based on traditional metal, but the band surely has a signature sound of its own. A song that made us soundless, is the semi-ballad ‘Fallen Children’. Magnificent acoustic guitars and melancholic vocals. The opus magnum of this album occludes this record and that is the fifteen minutes long ‘The Thirst’. Doom guitars have a kind of transparent My Dying Bride sound here and the guys loose themselves in vortex passages vs. an oasis of inertia. ‘Red Robes’ will explode the conquest of these Swedes!

Twee jaar geleden werden we omver geblazen door ’Wisdom’, het verrukkelijke debuutalbum van The Order Of Israfel, vier muzikanten uit Gotenburg, Zweden. Ze spelen doom metal die je traditioneel zou kunnen noemen (Black Sabbath en Cathedral als grootste invloeden) maar kruiden hun meeslepende composities met vurig gitaarwerk in pure NWOBHM stijl (denk aan Thin Lizzy) en verfraaien hun songs met prachtige akoestische gitaarmomenten. De band heeft intussen niet stil gezeten en ging meermaals of pad, zelfs met Pentagram. Maar er werd ook werk gemaakt van dit tweede album ‘Red Robes’ dat verdergaat waar de voorganger ophield.
Dat betekent dus weer genieten geblazen, want de heren bouwen wendingen in hun songs die ons enorm bevallen. Ze zetten ons in het begin even op het verkeerde been met een hups, oosters wijsje, maar weldra rollen de zinderende zware doom riffs over ons heen. De bezwerende zang van gitarist Tom Sutton klinkt ook nu weer lijzig en occult, terwijl acceleraties vergezeld worden van vurige gitaarsolo’s in ‘Staff In The Sand’. De statige, trage zang heeft in ‘The Red Robes’ weer een charmante frasering, een soort rituele gezangen illustreren de machtige samenzang van de heren en er is altijd een zeer weemoedige ondertoon. Dit nummer eindigt met akoestische gitaren en na het mediumtempo catchy ‘In Thrall To The Sorceress’ zijn het diezelfde akoestische gitaren die pure schoonheid toevoegen aan ‘Swords To The Sky’. Voor ‘Von Sturmer’ is een videoclip gemaakt en dit nummer heeft de meeste Black Sabbath invloeden, met een dreigend gesproken fragment als extra. Het gitaarwerk is om duimen en vingers af te likken op dit album, geënt op traditionele metal, maar de band heeft een eigen geluid dat zeer herkenbaar is. Een song waar we stil van werden is de semi-ballade ‘Fallen Children’. Prachtig akoestische gitaren en weemoedige zang. Het magnum opus van dit album besluit de schijf en is het vijftien minuten durende ‘The Thirst’. Doomgitaren hebben hier soms een transparante My Dying Bride sound en de mannen laten zich gaan in wervelende passages vs. de oase van inertie. ‘Red Robes’ zal de veroveringstocht van deze Zweden doen exploderen!
