WYTCH HAZEL: Prelude

The record label praises Wytch Hazel’s debut with references to the folk rock of Jethro Tull and the guitar harmonies of Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash. Ample reason to make me curious. A first check showed me WH’s outfit being a medieval one, like in Skyclad early days.
The opening song is a pretty sturdy one with good riff and catchy hook taking me to the dark ages in an instant. ‘Fight’ offers more of that stuff with again a driving riff in melodic packing. In ‘Mighty King’ I’m struck with the fact that the lyrics are Christian oriented, which I probably wouldn’t have noticed without the bio mentioning it. After a calm intro, we find in the epic ‘Conquerors’ again that melodic rocking with fine riffs, after which ‘Psalm’ offers a quiet haven. In their biography, they mention the regular use of the Picardian third, a piece that starts in minor key ending in major, as a genuine medieval French technique, so I asked someone with real musical knowledge to check this out. She found many, but mainly in the delicious instrumental ‘Prelude’ where, from 2’14†on, almost every 20 seconds they use one. Musicians amongst you might check this out. After that ‘Reign’ goes up tempo again with catchy chorus, intimate break and slow heavy outtro. The mainly acoustic ‘Dark Ages’ is a real highlight where melody and catchy chorus make a fine match. Then follows the sturdy title track, which performed live will probably incite to singalong ‘Wytch Hazel’ and where we get definite Thin Lizzy influence, while the before mentioned Picardian third is also used vocally. Closing ‘Strong’ is a strong melodic, more folk song again very catchy.
I would recommend this album to many, but especially to Falconer aficionados.

De platenfirma prijst het debuut van Wytch Hazel aan met verwijzingen naar de folkrock van Jethro Tull en de gitaarharmonieën van Thin Lizzy en Wishbone Ash. Dat was ruimschoots voldoende om me nieuwsgierig te maken. Een eerste controle toonde me alvast dat WH’s kledij middeleeuws is, zoals in Skyclad’s vroege dagen.
De opener is een stevige song met goeie riff en catchy hook die me meenemen naar de middeleeuwen. ‘Fight’ biedt meer van dat lekkers met weer een stuwende riff in melodieuze verpakking. Bij ‘Mighty King’ valt op dat de teksten christelijk georiënteerd is, hetgeen me waarschijnlijk niet zou opgevallen zijn zonder de vermelding in de bio. Na een rustige intro, bij het epische ‘Conquerors’ weer dat melodieus rockende met prima riff, waarna een rustpunt komt in de vorm van ‘Psalm’. In hun bio vermelden ze het frequente gebruik van de Picardische terts als muzikale stijlfiguur, een stukje in mineur dat eindigt in majeur, als echte Franse middeleeuwse techniek, dus vroeg ik iemand met echte muzikale bagage om dit te checken. Ze vond er vele, maar vooral in het heerlijk instrumentale ‘Prelude’, waar ze vanaf 2’14’, haast elke 20 sec er één gebruiken. Muzikanten onder jullie kunnen dit eens nagaan. Daarna gaat ‘Reign’ weer uptempo met catchy refrein, sfeervolle break en slepend heavy outtro. Het voornamelijk akoestische ‘Dark Ages’ een echte voltreffer met melodie en catchy refrein die perfect combineren. Dan volgt het titelnummer dat een stevige brok is, die in live uitvoering allicht uitnodigt om ‘Wytch Hazel’ mee te brullen en waar Thin Lizzy invloed in schuilt, terwijl de eerder vernoemde Picardische terts ook vocaal gebruikt wordt. Afsluiter ‘Strong’ is een sterk melodieus, meer folk nummer dat weer erg catchy is.
Ik zou dit album aan velen aanbevelen, maar voornamelijk aan Falconer fans.
