TANZWUT: Schreib Es Mit Blut

Barely a year after ‘Freitag der 13’, these Germans release their tenth album. ‘Schreib Es Mit Blut’ refers to Goethe’s Faust, more precisely his pact with Mephistopheles which is signed with blood.
The title track introduces us right away in their metal rock meets medieval sounds world.
Bagpipe and flute, German lyrics, melody and up tempo melt together to create an irresistible tune, where ‘Steig Ein’ nicely teams up with. In ‘Bruder Leichtsin’ Teufel’s voice adds a slight lunatic touch, while the song bathes in an ominous atmosphere. ‘Chaos’ has the same characteristics. ‘Geteert Und Gefedert’ is excitingly melodic (I thought that type of punishment originated in the Wild West, but is goes back to Antiquity), ‘Stille Wasser’ is a mainly calm tune and ‘Hahnenkampf’ is sturdy and winks to a song from my youth in summer camps ‘Der Hahn Ist Tot’. ‘Wenn Ich Tot Bin’ made me think of In Extremo, ‘Bleib Bei Mir’ is pounding and ‘Wer Wir Sind’ melancholic. Plenty of variation, though darker in nature and less catchy then the previous album.
Nothing new here, but this melodic combination of old and modern instruments with some German lyrics still suits me fine!

Amper een jaar na ‘Freitag der 13’ brengen deze Duitsers hun tiende album uit. ‘Schreib Es Mit Blut’ verwijst naar Goethe’s Faust, meer bepaald zijn pact met de Mephistofeles dat met bloed ondertekend wordt.
Het titelnummer zet meteen de ‘metalrock meets middeleeuwen’ toon. Doedelzak en fluit, Duitse tekst, melodie en gedreven tempo spannen samen om een onweerstaanbaar deuntje te maken, waarbij ‘Steig Ein’ mooi aansluit. In ‘Bruder Leichtsin’ legt Teufel’s stem een licht krankzinnig accentje, terwijl het nummer een dreigend sfeertje ademt. ‘Chaos’ heeft dezelfde kenmerken. ‘Geteert Und Gefedert’ is opzwepend melodieus (ik dacht dat die straf iets uit de Wild West was, maar blijkbaar bestond het al in de Oudheid), ‘Stille Wasser’ is grotendeels ingetogen en ‘Hahnenkampf’ is stevig met een knipoog naar een liedje uit mijn vakantiekolonie jeugd ‘Der Hahn Ist Tot’ ( ‘Mijn Haan is dood’ ). ‘Wenn Ich Tot Bin’ doet erg aan In Extremo denken, ‘Blieb Bei Mir’ is dreunend en ‘Wer Wir Sind’ melancholisch. Voldoende variatie, maar donker van aard en minder catchy dan het vorig album.
Niets nieuws onder de zon, maar de melodieuze combinatie van oude en moderne instrumenten met Duitse zang erbij blijft me prima bevallen!
