MUSTAN KUUN LAPSET: Kuolemanvirta (MCD)

Mustan Kuun Lapset (Children Of The Black Moon) has a legendary status in Finland because they were already active since 1993. In 2007 they called it quits, after the release of ‘Viimeinen Laula Kuolemasa’. However, the band reunited recently and now they release the MCD ‘Kuolemanvirta’. One can find two new songs and two live recordings on it.
The disc kicks of with the title track which offers us fluttering melodic guitars with the Finnish melancholy in the back. The pace is rather slow and vocals of Pete Lehtinen verge to black metal. Those vocals are sometimes a flaw of the band and they really contrast with the melodic solos they often play. It is a kind of classic heavy metal with screams. We are not really impressed by the second track: mediocre black metal with once again okay classic guitar soloing. The two live tracks have poor sound quality. Thus we think that legendary status will only stay in Finland.

Mustan Kuun Lapset (Children Of The Black Moon) heeft in Finland een legendarische status omdat ze al actief waren sinds 1993. In 2007 hielden ze er mee op, na het uitbrengen van ‘Viimeinen Laula Kuolemasa’. Recent is de band echter terug bij elkaar gekomen en onlangs bracht men de MCD ‘Kuolemanvirta’ uit. Er staan twee nieuwe songs op en twee live opnamen.
Het schijfje start met het titelnummer dat uitwaaierende melodieuze gitaren laat horen met de Finse weemoed als achtergrond. Het ritme is vrij traag en de zang van Pete Lehtinen neigt naar black metal. Die zang is soms wel het zwakke punt, ze contrasteert fel met de melodieuze solo’s die de band veelvuldig speelt. Het is in feite klassieke heavy metal met black metal screams. Het tweede nummer, daar zijn we niet kapot van: middelmatige black metal, maar wel met fraaie klassieke gitaarsolo’s. De twee live opnamen zijn van heel slechte kwaliteit en we nemen die legendarische status dus maar met een korrel zout.
