ODDLAND: Origin

Four years have gone by since Finnish Oddland flabbergasted us with their excellent debut album ’The Treachery Of Senses’, which was released via Century Media after they won a prize at the Finnish Metal Expo. They also really impressed me in a live situation at ProgPower 2013. Then it became a bit silent, until the four-piece signed a record deal with Sensory Records in March 2016.
This sophomore album ‘Origin’ was not mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö this time, but by another icon, more precisely Daniel Bergstrand at his Dugout Studios. Thus the sound really blows you away and especially guitars sound ultra chunky. Musically the band keeps on following its fickle and hectic approach. The complex progressive structures in ‘Esotericism’ and ‘Thanatos’ already make us dizzy, but there is always the powerful, strongly articulating voice of guitarist Sakara Ojanen that brings in some smoothened peace and calmness in between their extraordinary tour de forces. Influences of Tool, Pain Of Salvation and Opeth remain present, but they do the utmost to have a signature sound of their own. In the restless ‘Untrue’ one can even hear momentous vocals that are akin to crooner chants. A highlight is ‘Hidden’ which starts with piano and violins, but soon heavy riffs and beautiful vocal melodies melt together in a wonderful manner. Sometimes the band even has a kind of mechanical tinge: just listen to the pondering drums in ‘Skylines’. For some listeners it will be a bit too hectic, even a bit arty-farty (‘Faraway’), but in the same song one can even hear some incidental growls, what the band avoided in the past. The music sounds hooky and heavy in ‘Will’ and vocals a bit over excited, but if Oddland manages to avoid being too over-the-top, I am sure we can still expect a lot of beauty from these guys.

Het is alweer vier jaar geleden dat het Finse Oddland ons omver blies met het uitstekende debuutalbum ’The Treachery Of Senses’ wat na een prijswinning op Finnish Metal Expo uitkwam op Century Media. Ook live maakten zij een uitstekende beurt op ProgPower 2013. Daarna werd het wat stil tot de vierkoppige band in maart 2016 een contract tekende met Sensory Records.
Dit tweede album ‘Origin’ werd ditmaal niet door Dan Swanö gemixt en gemastered maar door een ander icoon, namelijk Daniel Bergstrand in zijn Dugout Studio. De sound is dan ook knallend en vooral de gitaren klinken megavet. Muzikaal blijft de band haar wispelturige, drukke koers volgen. De complexe progressieve structuren in ‘Esotericism’ en ‘Thanatos’ doen ons al eens sterretjes zien, maar er is altijd de gebiedende, sterk articulerende zang van gitarist Sakari Ojanen welke zalvend optreedt tussen alle krachtpatserij. Invloeden van Tool, Pain Of Salvation en Opeth blijven aanwezig, maar men doet zijn uiterste best om origineel uit de hoek te komen. In het onrustige ‘Untrue’ hoort daar zelfs geladen zang bij die in de buurt van een crooner komt. Een hoogtepunt is ‘Hidden’ dat aanvangt met piano en viool, maar al spoedig harde riffs met mooie zangmelodieën laat samengaan. Soms heeft de band zelfs iets machinaal, luister maar naar de betonnen drums in ‘Skylines’. Het mag voor sommige luisteraars wat vermoeiend worden, zelfs een beetje arty-farty (‘Faraway’) maar in datzelfde nummer komen zelfs enige grunts voorbij, wat de band in het verleden vermeed. De muziek klinkt hoekig en heftig in ‘Will’ en de zang een beetje over geëxciteerd, maar als Oddland er op let om niet teveel over-the-top te gaan, dan kunnen we nog veel moois van deze heren verwachten.
