ZODIAC: Grain Of Soul

In the extensive supply of vintage hard rock bands that worship the seventies, there are outfits that instantly appeal to us and others we have our doubts about. In the first category we surely find Zodiac (and also The Order Of Israfel, but that’s another story). It is true, Zodiac did a kind of foul play by covering Neil Young’s ‘Cortez The Killer’ in a magnificent manner on ’A Hiding Place’, bringing us in higher spirits right away. Yet tracks such as ‘Coming Home’ and ‘Believer’ also made us fly away on that magic carpet ride of exceptional bands.
After the excellent live registration last year, called ’Road Tapes Volume 1’, the four guys, with Long Distance Calling drummer Janosch Rathmer in their ranks, have focused on the fourth studio album. ‘Grain Of Soul’ appears to be the title and the least we can say is that it is no copycat of the former albums. The vintage Hammond sounds are gone, as well as the lengthy tracks and they go for a firm rocking and straight forward approach. Initially it fills me with confusion. Where are their epic compositions? What about the emotive blues influences? After several spins the pieces of the puzzle fall into each other and we can conclude that we are dealing with exceptionally skilled song crafters. In compact format this time, indeed, but I challenge you to remain unmoved during the stunning ‘Follow You’ (watch the video clip!) or the fetching rock in ZZ Top style of ‘Ain’t Coming Back’. Thus Zodiac has exchanged the astral psychedelic straitjacket for a tight-fitting suit that brims with steamy rock songs. There are outstanding songs amongst them, such as opener ‘Rebirth By Fire’, the up-tempo marshy vintage rock of ‘Animal’ or the alternative rock/grunge plethora of ‘Down’ and ‘Get Out’. It seems as if the band has focused on the nineties instead of the seventies this time. Not only grunge and alternative rock shine through in their signature compositions, but also cross-over with spoken rap-vocals in ‘Sinner’. To our delight the amazing guitar solos full of emotion remain present. And the sure-fire vocals of the same Nick van Delft. It takes some time to get used to it, but the band managed to take this musical curve with verve and they bring it to a fine ending.

In het ruime aanbod vintage hardrock bands welke de jaren zeventig hoog in het vaandel dragen, zijn er die ons meteen aanspreken en anderen waarover we minder laaiend enthousiast zijn. Bij de eerste categorie noemen we zeker Zodiac (en ook The Order Of Israfel, maar dat is een ander verhaal). Zodiac speelde natuurlijk wel een beetje vals door ‘Cortez The Killer’ van Neil Young op ’A Hiding Place’ een stevige bolwassing te geven waardoor we meteen in hogere sferen belandden, maar tracks als ‘Coming Home’ en ‘Believer’ deden ons evenzeer wegzweven op een magisch tapijt van klanken.
Na de uitstekende live registratie vorig jaar ’Road Tapes Volume 1’ hebben de vier heren, met Long Distance Calling drummer Janosch Rathmer in de gelederen, werk gemaakt van een vierde album. ‘Grain Of Soul’ is de naam en het minste wat we kunnen zeggen is dat het geen herhalingsoefening is. De warme Hammondklanken zijn geschrapt, de lange tracks evenzeer en men gaat er stevig rockend en to the point tegenaan. Aanvankelijk sputter ik wat tegen. Waar zijn hun epische composities? Waar zijn de bluesy invloeden? Daarna valt het kwartje en kan je niet anders dan toegeven dat hier getalenteerde songsmeden aan het werk zijn. In compacte vorm ditmaal ja, maar blijf maar eens onbewogen bij de kraker ‘Follow You’ (bekijk de video) of de aanstekelijke rock in ZZ Top format van ‘Ain’t Coming Back’. Zodiac heeft het astrale psychedelische keurslijf dus verruild voor een strak pak vol stomende rocksongs. En daar zijn er fantastische bij, zoals opener ‘Rebirth By Fire’, ‘de uptempo zompige vintage rock van ‘Animal’ of alternative rock/grunge knipogen als ‘Down’ en ‘Get Out’. Het lijkt wel of de band zich na de jaren zeventig op de jaren negentig geworpen heeft, want niet alleen grunge en alternatieve rock schemeren door in de eigen composities, maar ook crossover met gesproken rapzang in ‘Sinner’. Blijven aanwezig tot onze vreugde: de fantastische gitaarsolo’s vol emoties. En de prima zang van dezelfde man Nick van Delft. Het is even wennen, maar de band weet ook deze muzikale bocht met verve tot een goed einde te brengen.
