DGM: The Passage

DGM happens to be one of the most accomplished bands hailing from Italy. Even when the band existed of three instrumentalists who gave their name to the band, they caught my attention with their ingenious performances in Mediterranean Dream Theater style. The founding members are gone for a long time, but a new collective has created a new boost since 2007. We spot guitarist Simone Mularoni in the line-up and in the meantime he is one of the most famous and respected producers in the (Italian) scene, vocalist Marco Basile whose powerful voice is more and more akin to the one of Russel Allen (Symphony X), keyboardist Emanuele Casali who once started in a (oh coincidence) Dream Theater cover band and the concrete rhythm section made up of bassist Andrea Arcangeli and drummer Fabio Costantino.
DGM has achieved a lot of genuine respect in the progressive metal scene through the years. Their presence at ProgPower is legendary, they toured with Symphony X and Pagan’s Mind and after the previous album ‘Momentum’ they even did their first headline tour in Japan. The new studio album ‘The Passage’ appears to be their first for Frontiers Records and continues the tradition of amazing compositions with staggering virtuosity. The hard-working musicians already shot two video clips for the new material, new gigs are planned and eminent colleagues as Tom Englund (Evergrey) and Michael Romeo (Symphony X) dropped in to add their contribution to one of the songs of the Italians. And obviously all was recorded and perfected by Simone Mularoni at the Domination Studios in San Marino.
Thus it turned into a stunner as fury, a must have for aficionados of vital progressive metal with explosive instrumental tour de forces and strong melodies. Fans who are a bit tired of Dream Theater or Symphony X have a rejuvenated version ready to hand right here. What are you waiting for? It is really breathtaking what DGM already performs in the opening track ‘The Secret’. The song is divided in two parts (together a quarter of an hour) and includes in addition to vigorous outbursts, finger-blistering solos on guitar and keyboards also a calm passage with sensitive vocals and piano. The single ‘Animal’ is stamping and catchy, starting with lots of reverb on the guitars. They even go beyond browbeat when Tom Englund puts his mark on the whole thing in ‘Ghost Of Insanity’. To have a perfect example of the thundering drums of Costantino, just listen to ‘Fallen’ (second video). They leave the listener breathless and astonished, surely when you hear the high octane energy of ‘Dogma’ when guitarist Michael Romeo puts extra oil on the fire. But there are two moments of quiescence as well, one might call it ballads: the brief ‘Disguise’ and the occluding track ‘In Sorrow’. Sung in a wonderful manner. Let us hope that DGM now finally will have a proper breakthrough, they deserve it since years!

DGM is één van de meest talentrijke bands uit Italië. Al toen de band bestond uit drie instrumentalisten die de naam aan de groep gaven, trokken ze mijn aandacht door hun virtuoze spel in zuiderse Dream Theater stijl. De oprichters zijn allang uit het zicht verdwenen, maar een nieuw collectief heeft sinds 2007 een extra boost gecreëerd. We spotten immers gitarist Simone Mularoni in de bezetting die inmiddels één van de bekendste en meest gerespecteerde producers uit de (Italiaanse) scène geworden is, zanger Marco Basile wiens krachtige stemgeluid meer en meer op dat van Russel Allen (Symphony X) gaat lijken, toetsenist Emanuele Casali die ooit begon in een (o toeval) Dream Theter coverband en de betonnen ritmesectie bestaande uit bassist Andrea Arcangeli en drummer Fabio Costantino.
DGM heeft in al die jaren veel respect vergaard in de progressieve metal scène. Hun aanwezigheid op ProgPower is legendarisch, ze toerden met Symphony X en Pagan’s Mind en gingen na het vorige album ‘Momentum’ zelfs hun eerste headlinetour in Japan aan. Het nieuwe studioalbum ‘The Passage’ is het eerste voor broodheer Frontiers en zet de traditie van sterke composities met duizelingwekkende virtuositeit verder. De ondernemende muzikanten hebben al twee videoclips opgenomen voor het nieuwe materiaal, nieuwe concerten staan gepland en eminente collega’s als Tom Englund (Evergrey) en Michael Romeo (Symphony X) kwamen even langs om hun bijdrage te leveren aan één van de songs van de Italianen. En natuurlijk werd alles opgenomen en geperfectioneerd door Simone Mularoni in de Domination studio in San Marino.
Het is dan ook een knaller van jewelste geworden, een must voor liefhebbers van vitale progressieve metal met explosief instrumentaal vertoon en sterke melodieën. Fans die wat uitgekeken zijn op Dream Theater of Symphony X hebben hier een verjongde versie die voor het grijpen ligt. Waar wachten jullie op? Het is werkelijk adembenemend wat DGM in de opener ‘The Secret’ al presteert. De song is in twee delen verdeeld (samen een kwartier lang) en kent buiten krachtige uitbarstingen, flitsende solo’s op gitaar en keyboards ook een kalme passage met sensitieve zang en piano. De single ‘Animal’ is stotend en catchy, startende met veel reverb op de gitaren. Men steekt nog een tandje bij om te overdonderen wanneer Tom Englund in ‘Ghost Of Insanity’ zijn stempel op het geheel drukt. Om een perfect voorbeeld te hebben van de beukende drums van Costantino, luister maar eens naar ‘Fallen’ (tweede video). Men laat de luisteraar verbluft en buiten adem achter, zeker wanneer je de high energy van ‘Dogma’ hoort waar gitarist Michael Romeo nog wat extra olie op het vuur gooit. Maar er zijn ook twee rustpauzes die we gevoelige ballades kunnen noemen, het korte ‘Disguise’ en de afsluiter ‘In Sorrow’. Mooi gezongen. Laat ons hopen dat DGM nu eens eindelijk nog meer doorbreekt, zij verdienen dit al jaren!
