ORPHANED LAND & AMASEFFER: Kna'an

It was written in the stars that the musical paths of Orphaned Land and Amaseffer would cross one day. Both bands hail from Israel and represent more or less the same ideology. Thus here we have a cooperation between Kobi Farhi (singer Orphaned Land) and Erez Yohanan (Amaseffer). Yet a certain Walter Wayers appears to be the initiator of this cooperation. As director of the Meminngem Landestheater, he has written a play one can consider as the modern version of the story of Abraham in the land of Canaan. This theme with biblical proportions is musically created by the Israeli musicians and mainly shows, even more than the recent albums of Orphaned Land, the calm, storytelling side of the band. But it is done in a very skilful manner concerning interpretation and performance. Several musicians of Orphaned Land contributed to this album.
The disc starts with a momentous narration, percussion and eastern melodies. ‘The Angel Of The Lord’ opens mysterious with low-pitched voice, but there is a sweet sung chorus and a sure-fire guitar solo. The ballad ‘Naked – Sarah And Abraham’ is followed by a doom-like song with dramatic female vocals. Indeed, the album has a very theatrical approach. Strings and riffs are the foundation for the solemn, reflective chants of Kobi in ‘Naked – Abraham’. There are no grunts or harsh vocals on ‘Kna’an’, Kobi goes for a charm offensive and that’s obvious illustrated in the poppy ‘A Tree Without No Fruit – Sarah’. The energetic rock songs are regaled with oriental vocal lines, while female vocals are really pompous and beautiful in ‘The Vision’. The next tracks are storytelling and thoughtful with acoustic guitars, until the darker tinged ‘Akeda’ throws in few heavy riffs and strings again. The album has a fine flow, although it never gets really heavy. This is for fans of true oriental rock music.
In November Orphaned Land will celebrate its 25th anniversary and they do that with a European tour with Voodoo Kungfu (from China) and Imperial Age from Russia. Most of the songs on ‘Kna’an’ would not be misplaced between the lighter stuff from recent years of these Israeli.

Het stond in de sterren geschreven dat de muzikale paden van Orphaned Land en Amaseffer ooit zouden kruisen. Beide zijn afkomstig uit Israël en beogen een soortgelijke ideologie. Dit is dan ook een samenwerking tussen Kobi Farhi (zanger Orphaned Land) en Erez Yohanan (Amaseffer). Toch is ene Walter Wayers de initiator van deze coöperatie. Als directeur van het Meminngem Landestheater schreef hij een stuk dat we kunnen beschouwen als het moderne verhaal van Abraham in het land van Canaan. Dit thema met Bijbelse proporties wordt muzikaal ingevuld door de Israëlische muzikanten en etaleert, nog meer dan op de laatste albums van Orphaned Land zelf, de kalme, verhalende kant van de band. Wel vertoont dit een groot vakmanschap op gebied van interpretatie en uitvoering. Meerdere muzikanten van Orphaned Land hebben er dan ook hun steentje aan bijgedragen.
Het album start met een gewichtige vertelstem, percussie en oosterse melodieën. Geheimzinnig opent ‘The Angel Of The Lord’ met lage zang, maar er is een zoet refrein en een knappe gitaarsolo. Na de ballad ‘Naked – Sarah And Abraham’ volgt een doomachtige song met dramatische vrouwenzang. Het album heeft dan ook een erg theatrale aanpak. Violen en riffs vormen de basis voor de plechtige, reflectieve zang van Kobi in ‘Naked – Abraham’. Geen grunts op ‘Kna’an’, Kobi gaat hier voor een charmeoffensief wat ten volle geïllustreerd wordt in het poppy ‘A Tree Without No Fruit – Sarah’. De energieke rock in wordt veelal gebracht met oriëntaalse zanglijnen, waarbij de vrouwenzang in ‘The Vision’ erg gewichtig en mooi is. De volgende songs zijn verhalend en beschouwend met akoestische gitaren, al wordt het donkere ‘Akeda’ ook weer verfraaid met strijkers en heavy riffs. Het album kent een fijne flow, al wordt het nooit echt heavy. Voor liefhebbers van echte oriëntaalse rockmuziek.
In november viert Orphaned Land haar 25e verjaardag en doet dat met een Europese tournee, samen met Voodoo Kungfu uit China en Imperial Age uit Rusland. De meeste songs op ‘Kna’an’ zouden niet misstaan tussen het lichtere werk van de Israëliërs van de laatste jaren.
