ENEMY OF REALITY: Arakhne

The second album by Greek symphonic metal band Enemy Of Reality is nothing less than a masterful album with rich and inspiring music that takes you on a fascinating trip through the Greek mythology story of Arakhne. The strength of this album is the fact that it appears to be very complex and busy on a first listen, but that is becomes more and more transparent with every spin. Singer Iliana has a strong soprano voice which she uses in a marvellous way and she is backed by a very competent band with guitarist Steelianos, bass player Thanos and new keyboard player Leonidas as main writers.
In a musical field that is crowded by so many bands now, they still manage to stand out with their epic pieces and top musicianship. This is symphonic metal for the connoisseur: great compositions, arrangements and playing! This is music that grows with every listening session and that’s always a good sign. As a way of icing the cake they got a whole list of guest musicians: Jeff Waters (Annihilator), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody Of Fire & Angra), Chiara Malvesti (Therion & Crysalys) and George Emmanuel (Rotting Christ) at the mixing desk. The impressive artwork was done by Tony Midi Artworks (a.o. Papa Roach). This is an album for the real music fan, notwithstanding the genre.

Voor het tweede album van Enemy Of Reality deed de band beroep op crowdfunding en dat bleek een succes. Met een zangeres zoals Iliana heb je immers steeds de garantie dat er kwaliteit wordt afgeleverd. Haar klassiek geschoolde stem in combinatie met symfonische metal is immers steeds een avontuur. Voor ‘Arakhne’ heeft ze niet alleen haar band achter zich, maar kon ze eveneens rekenen op tal van collega’s uit het metal wereldje om het album extra glans te geven. Inhoudelijk is het album geïnspireerd op de Griekse mythologie en meer bepaald de mythe van Arakhne. Complex, confronterend en druk, dat zijn de woorden die ons spontaan te binnen schieten bij het beluisteren van dit album.
De sopraan van Iliana snijdt als een mes doorheen de nummers die voorzien worden van volgepropte symfonische arrangementen. Geen plaatje om even bij een rustig diner op te zetten, maar wel fascinerend als je er wil voor gaan zitten! Enemy Of Reality verzet hier toch even de bakens van de symfonische metal. Dit is muziek zonder compromissen en de composities zijn sterk. De productie is scherp en doordringend, de arrangementen zijn geniaal. De complexiteit van de plaat kan voor sommigen een struikelblok worden, maar wie van een muzikale uitdaging houdt wordt hier rijkelijk bediend. Symfonische metal voor gevorderden!
