AETERNITAS: House Of Usher

In 2004 we reviewed the second album from this German gothic metal band Aeternitas, called ’La Danse Macabre’. In 2009 they also released ‘Rappacinis Tochter’ where they did a successful tour in Germany for with more than fifty theatrical concerts. Their gothic metal did it very well in Germany. Since 2012, the band – with Anja and Alexander Hunzinger as pivotal and founding members – worked at a successor. This time they have focused on a concept album about the book ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ from Edgar Allan Poe.
Although the years have gone by, there is not so much changed in the music of Aeternitas. They still play proper gothic metal with loads of symphonic influences, while vocals of Alma Mathar and (clean) male vocalist Oliver Bandmann have the lion’s share in the storytelling piece of work. The founding members are prominently present in fervent guitar and keyboard skills, although it is mainly a supporting role for the dialogues of their singers. After a cinematic intro one can hear a refined band with orchestral arrangements. Alexander Hunzinger himself did the recordings and the mix at his Serpina Studio, but they contacted Henning Basse for the production of the vocals. The mastering was in the hands of Götz Kretschmann. The fifteen songs are catchy and accessible, while three of them are graced with massive choirs. ‘Fear’ and the catchy ‘Can You Hear The Demons’ have a bit longer guitar solo, while the ballad ‘Madeline’ happens to be a moment of reflection in the engrossing story. If you have a liking for gothic theatre metal, then ‘House Of Usher’ will be a mature and meritorious disc to add to your collection.

In 2004 bespraken we het tweede album van deze Duitse gothic metal band Aeternitas ’La Danse Macabre’. In 2009 brachten ze ook nog ‘Rappacinis Tochter’ uit waar ze een succesrijke tournee door Duitsland voor deden met meer dan vijftig theatrale concerten. De gotische musical sloeg aan bij onze oosterburen. Sinds 2012 werkte de band – met Anja en Alexander Hunzinger als motor en oprichters - aan een opvolger. Ditmaal hebben zij zich gefocust op een conceptalbum over het boek ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ van Edgar Allan Poe.
Hoewel de jaren verstreken zijn, is er niet veel veranderd aan het geluid van Aeternitas. Ze spelen nog steeds degelijke gotische metal met veel symfonische invloeden, waarbij de zang van Alma Mathar en (cleane) vocalist Oliver Bandmann een leeuwendeel opeist in het verhalende werkstuk. De oprichters zijn sterk aanwezig in fervent gitaar- en keyboards werk, al is dit vooral begeleidend bij de dialogen van hun vocalisten. Na de filmische intro horen we een verfijnde band met orkestrale arrangementen. Alexander Hunzinger deed trouwens zelf de opnamen en de mix in zijn Serpina studio, maar voor de zangpartijen contacteerde men Henning Basse. De mastering was in handen van Götz Kretschmann. De vijftien songs zijn toegankelijk, met in een drietal songs uitgebreide koorzang. ‘Fear’ en het catchy ‘Can You Hear The Demons’ hebben een wat langere gitaarsolo, terwijl de ballade ‘Madeline’ een moment van bezinning is in de spannende verhaallijn. Hou je van gotische theatermetal, dan is ‘House Of Usher’ een volwassen en verdienstelijke schijf om aan je collectie toe te voegen.
