HAMMERFALL: Built To Last

HammerFall, the Swedish representatives of classical heavy metal of the eighties with a modern twist, returned to the scène with a bang about two years ago with ’®Evolution’, after a sabbatical of eighteen months. They managed to keep that momentum on ‘Built To Last’, since they sound fresh and inspired, even if this happens to be their tenth album in two decennia.
Naturally it all sounds very familiar and you can sing along the choruses after two spins, but isn’t that exactly the strength of this band? ‘Bring It!’ and ‘Hammer High’ are two perfect examples of simple, yet effective hymns to raise your fists and enjoy. The nasal, yet sonorous voice of Joacim Cans was coached for the second time by producer James Michael (SIXX AM) in LA, but the instrumental tour de forces were given in the hands of the infamous Fredrik Nordström for the final mix. ‘The Sacred Vow’ slackens down pace a bit, but the guitar skills and solos of Oscar Dronjak and co-producer Pontus Norgren are ace in every single song. Halfway the album we find the (sure-fire) ballad ‘Twilight Princess’ in which even flutes pop up. For the rest this album mainly includes tight and fast stuff with room for sturdy metal choirs and loads of guitar solos. A next hymn that will do well, is ‘New Breed’. It calls for uniting all metal heads in the world, every generation that has a soft spot for (in this case Swedish) steel. It speaks for itself that they did not shun some clichés, but what HammerFall does, is done to a turn. As final track is ‘Second To None’ a slightly diverse song that digs deeper. With piano, epic leads and slower tempo, the lyrics deal with some thoughts about the current way of the world. And they do that in a wonderful manner. The lustrum can be celebrated with a strong album that – as the title suggests – appears to be timeless and recommended to aficionados of the pure traditional approach of heavy metal.

HammerFall, de Zweedse vertegenwoordigers van klassieke heavy metal uit de jaren tachtig in een modern jasje, kwam twee jaar geleden sterk terug met ‘®Evolution’ na een sabbatperiode van achttien maanden. Dit momentum hebben ze kunnen behouden op ‘Built To Last’ want ze klinken fris en bevlogen, ook al is dit hun tiende album in twee decennia.
Natuurlijk klinkt het allemaal erg vertrouwd en kan je de refreinen na twee luisterbeurten al meebrullen, maar is dat niet juist de sterkte van deze band? ‘Bring It!’ en ‘Hammer High’ zijn twee uitstekende voorbeelden van simpele, maar effectieve hymnen om de vuisten de lucht in te doen gaan. De nasale, maar heldere stem van Joacim Cans kreeg voor de tweede maal de goede zorgen van producer James Michael (SIXX AM) in LA, maar de instrumentale krachtpatserij lieten ze over aan de befaamde Fredrik Nordström voor de eindmix. ‘The Sacred Vow’ neemt wat gas terug, maar het gitaarwerk van Oscar Dronjak en medeproducer Pontus Norgren is in elke song tot in de puntjes verzorgd. Halverwege vinden we de (puike) ballad ‘Twilight Princess’ waarin zelfs fluit opduikt. Verder bevat dit album vooral strak en snel werk met ruimte voor kloeke metalkoren en veel gitaarsolo’s. Een volgende metal hymne die het erg goed zal doen is ‘New Breed’ dat oproept tot een vereniging van alle metal heads ter wereld, elke generatie die het (in dit geval Zweeds) staal een warm hart toedraagt. Natuurlijk wordt er weer niet op een cliché meer of minder gekeken, maar wat HammerFall doet, doen ze goed. Als laatste is ‘Second To None’ toch nog een iets afwijkende track die wat dieper graaft. Met piano, epische leads en een trager tempo worden hier enige bedenkingen geplaatst bij de huidige toestand in de wereld. En dat doen ze voortreffelijk. Het lustrum kan gevierd worden met een sterk album dat – zoals de titel aangeeft – tijdloos is en een aanrader voor liefhebbers van de kerngedachte van heavy metal.
