HELMET: Dead To The World

It took Helmet six years to produce another album and it shows when the album starts with tracks like ‘Life Or Dead’ and ‘I Love My Guru’. It’s a outburst of controlled energy that promises a strong album. A band who influenced icons like the Deftones, Rage Against The Machine, Pantera or Tool have a reputation to live up to and if they really do that with this album is a matter for the die-hards.
One thing is for sure: ‘Dead To The World’ reveals a band that sounds inspired, motivated and eager to play for their lives. Singer and front man Page Hamilton has a background in jazz and that helps him to control his voice and makes him take care of variation and light and shade. So what we get is ten new songs worthy of that name and good performances sculptured by a good but harsh production by Page and Jay Baumgardner. In the spring they will tour Europe and this new album will surely help them to get an audience. Fascinating record!

Het kostte Helmet zes jaar om een nieuwe plaat af te leveren, maar het was het wachten waard. De plaat opent met ‘Life Or Dead’ en ‘I Love My Guru’, twee nummers die je meteen ‘in de zone’ brengen. Een groep die iconen zoals de Deftones, Rage Against The Machine, Tool of Pantera heeft beïnvloed moet de lat hoog leggen en of ze die hier hoog genoeg hebben gelegd, laten we over aan de diehards, maar we horen op ‘Dead Of The World’ in elk geval een geïnspireerde, gemotiveerde en hongerige band.
Zanger Page Hamilton heeft een jazz achtergrond en dat heeft zo zijn voordeel. Hij weet namelijk goed te doseren en te zorgen voor voldoende variatie, zowel in de songs als in de wijze waarop hij zijn stem gebruikt. We krijgen hier tien nieuwe songs die naam waardig en de puike uitvoeringen worden mooi in klank gezet bij middel van een sterke maar bijtende productie van Page en Jay Baumgardner. In het voorjaar van 2017 toert de groep in Europa en deze nieuwe plaat is zeker een goed uithangbord om volk te trekken. Fascinerend plaatje!
