DIABOL BORUTA: Widziadla

Diabol Boruta happens to be a character from the Polish mythology, folklore and literature and consequently it is a suitable name for a folk metal collective from that country, being active since 2011. The debut album ‘Stare Gledzby’ (2015) is rapidly followed by this successor ‘Widziadla’. The band sings in Polish language (except for the two last songs and these are right away more accessible) and that happens with clean voice in which a rougher timbre occurs from time to time. Singer/bassist Pawel Rudobrody is, together with guitarist Mirek Mamczur, the motor behind this band. They add accordion, flutes and cither as folk instruments and in some of the songs we obviously notice Slavonic flavours.
The album begins with soaring synthesizers and percussion, next they are working their way through a couple of accessible folk songs. They play tight, while accordion more than once adds any extra folk melodies. In wilder songs such as ‘Marzanna – Smiercicha’ and ‘Nim Pierwsza’ we even notice any energetic punk influences and in the latter one a low-ranged grunt pops up, but that’s not flawless. In the instrumental ‘Bledne Ogniki’ and the stamping ‘Wyjce’ some cheerful flutes increase the joy. Longer tracks like ‘Sobotki’ and ‘Kupala Night’ are decent, but the space to experiment is filled with few memorable instrumental escapades. Without any doubt the band might be able to divert its audience in their home country, but we miss some extra elements in their sound to make them a contender for the international (sub)top.

Diabol Boruta is een figuur uit de Poolse mythologie, folklore en literatuur en het is dan ook de geknipte naam voor een folk metal gezelschap uit dat land dat sinds 2011 actief is. Na ‘Stare Gledzby’ in 2015 volgt al vlug deze opvolger ‘Widziadla’. De band zingt in het Pools (behalve in de twee laatste songs, die dan meteen ook wat toegankelijker klinken) en dat gebeurt met cleane zang waarin soms een ruwer timbre opduikt. Zanger/bassist Pawel Rudobrody is samen met gitarist Mirek Mamczur de stuwende kracht achter deze band. Ze voegen accordeon, fluitjes en citer toe als folk instrumenten en we merken in sommige songs uiteraard een Slavisch tintje.
Met zwevende synths en percussie opent het album, om zich daarna doorheen een aantal toegankelijke folksongs te werken. Er wordt strak gespeeld, terwijl accordeon meermaals extra folk melodieën toevoegt. In wildere songs als ‘Marzanna – Smiercicha’ en ‘Nim Pierwsza’ zitten zelfs wat uitgelaten punkinvloeden en in het laatste horen we even een lage gromzang, maar dat is niet zo geslaagd. In het instrumentale ‘Bledne Ogniki’ en het stompende ‘Wyjce’ komt ook enig fluitspel de vreugde vergroten. Langere songs als ‘Sobotki’ en ‘Kupala Night’ zijn degelijk, maar de ruimte wordt weinig opgevuld met memorabele instrumentale escapades. De band kan in eigen land ongetwijfeld het publiek vermaken, zo ingewikkeld is hun muziek niet, maar we missen nog dat extra element in hun geluid dat hen tot een internationale (sub)topper kan maken.
