EINHERJER: Dragons Of The North XX

Norwegian Einherjer struck back strongly in 2014 with ‘Av Oss, For Oss’, but the sturdy Vikings are already active for more than twenty years (okay, with an interruption) and thus they are one of the true pioneers of the Viking metal genre. Twenty years ago the band of Frode ‘Grimar’ Glesnes released their debut album ‘Dragons Of The North’ and late November it will be re-released by Indie Recordings with new artwork and completely re-recorded. The new recordings in Studio Borealis and ABC Studios in Norway are mixed by Matt Hyde in Los Angeles. The result is a chunky sound and now and then any new interpretations of the music.
When we listen back to ‘Dragons Of The North’ today, we realize one more time that Einherjer deserves to be praised as echelons of the genre. You also notice that the music was not rooted in black metal, but it adds harsh elements to classical heavy metal. That can be heard in numerous melodic guitar solos and rough, creepy, yet intelligible vocals. The tribal rhythms of the opening title track soon pass into robust pagan metal, while we can hear some folk melodies in the guitar skills. ‘Dreamstorm’ is faster, they go to battle with creepy chants and heathen (clean) harmony vocals. We can enjoy lengthy and fervent soloing in galore. ‘Forever Empire’ is – mainly due to vocals – a bit unclear and chaotic. The classic heavy metal is graced with solos, but with keyboards as well. This is rough, but no black metal and that is tenable for the next songs too. In the long ‘Storms Of The Elder’ we hear an epic spoken fragment, followed by a sonorous, magnificent semi-acoustic guitar solo. ‘Ballad Of The Swords’ is, as the title suggests, a slower stunner and they round off with an atmospheric outro. It never sounds dated and consequently ‘Dragons Of The North’ is worth purchasing, by older fans when you have missed it as well as by the young generation Viking metal fans to know the roots of the genre.

In 2014 kwam het Noorse Einherjer nog sterk terug met ‘Av Oss, For Oss’, maar de stoere Vikingen zijn al meer dan twintig jaar actief (met een onderbreking) en zij behoren dus tot de pioniers van het Viking metal genre. De band van Frode ‘Grimar’ Glesnes bracht twintig jaar geleden het debuutalbum ‘Dragons Of The North’ uit en eind november wordt dit, voorzien van nieuw artwork en helemaal opnieuw opgenomen, heruitgebracht door Indie Recordings. De opnamen in Studio Borealis en ABC studio in Noorwegen werden gemixt door Matt Hyde in Los Angeles. Een vet geluid is het resultaat en toch wel enkele andere interpretaties her en der.
Wanneer we vandaag de dag ‘Dragons Of The North’ opnieuw beluisteren, dan beseffen we dat Einherjer heel terecht tot de echelons van het genre behoort. Je merkt eveneens dat hun muziek nog niet in black metal geworteld was, maar ruwe elementen toevoegt aan klassieke heavy metal. Dat vertaalt zich in talloze melodieuze gitaarsolo’s en ruwe, maar verstaanbare zang. De tribale ritmes van het openende titelnummer gaan spoedig over in stevige pagan metal, terwijl in het gitaarwerk ook enige folk melodieën merkbaar zijn. ‘Dreamstorm’ is sneller, men trekt ten strijde met knekelzang en heidense (cleane) samenzang. We kunnen lang genieten van vurig soleerwerk. ‘Forever Empire’ komt – voornamelijk door de zang – nogal onduidelijk en rommelig over, terwijl de klassieke metal weer verfraaid wordt met veel solo’s, maar ook met toetsen. Dit is ruw, maar geen black metal en dat geldt ook voor de volgende songs. In het lange ‘Storms Of The Elder’ horen we een gesproken episch fragment, gevolgd door een heldere, prachtige semiakoestische gitaarsolo. ‘Ballad Of The Swords’ is, zoals de titel al aangeeft, een slepende kanjer om met een atmosferische outro te eindigen. Dit klinkt nergens gedateerd en ‘Dragons Of The North’ is dan ook dubbel en dik de aanschaf waard, zowel voor de oudere garde als je dit gemist hebt als voor de jongere generatie Viking metalfans.
