FEANOR: We Are Heavy Metal

This is the third album for this HM quartet from Argentine, which they recorded with the help of a whole bunch of guest musicians. Their look on the cover reminds of Manowar and in the music that influence is present as well, by the way, Ross The Boss plays guitar on four of the songs.
The album opens with the sturdy title track with shout along, catchy chorus, narrative part, fine guitar solo (check the official video). ‘Eol’, as well as some other songs, is inspired by Tolkien’s work and is a slower, rather epic piece. ‘Earendil’ starts with an acoustic medieval guitar part and is really epic with Sven’s mighty voice adding the right atmosphere. After that, ‘Discipline’ is contrasting as a speedy metal piece. A crackling fire and harpsichord set the right mood in the instrumental ‘Water Gardens’, transiting smoothly into the slower, epic again (e.g. male choir and a quiet break with female voices) ‘Dagor’. ‘White & Blue’ has also a rather long, medieval sounding intro before turning epic again, including a sparkling guitar solo. After that, ‘Crying Games’ is speedier with catchy chorus, while ‘Visitors’ draws the epic card again, with bombastic quiet middle piece, catchy vocal hooks and rough chopping outro. ‘Darkness’ is brooding, but the short ‘The Scribe’ with pounding hooves and narrative voice is in fact the intro for ‘Gilgamesh’, a mix of speed and epic, to close this disc.
In short, great stuff for those who like epic heavy metal.

Dit is het derde album van dit HM kwartet uit Argentinië, dat ze met de hulp van een hele rist gastmuzikanten ingeblikt hebben. Hun look op de hoes van het album doet aan Manowar denken en ook in de muziek klinkt die invloed wat door, Ross The Boss speelt overigens gitaar in vier nummers.
Het album opent met het stevige titelnummer met lekker, catchy refrein om mee te brullen, verhalend stuk, ferme gitaarsolo (check de officiële video). ‘Eol’, evenals enkele andere nummers, is geïnspireerd door Tolkien’s oeuvre en is een tragere, eerder epische song. ‘Earendil’ begint met een akoestisch middeleeuws gitaarstuk en is deze keer écht episch met Sven’s machtige stem die sfeer bijzet. Daarna contrasteert ‘Discipline’ als een speedy metal brok. Geknetter van een vuurtje en klavecimbel zorgen voor sfeer in het instrumentale ‘Water Gardens’, dat overgaat in het weer tragere, epische (o.a. mannenkoor en een rustige break met vrouwenstemmen) ‘Dagor’. ‘White & Blue’ heeft ook een vrij lange, middeleeuws aandoende intro, vooraleer de epische toer op te gaan, inclusief schitterende gitaarsolo. Daarna is ‘Crying Games’ weer speedier met catchy refrein, terwijl ‘Visitors’ weer de epische kaart trekt, met bombastisch rustig middenstuk, catchy vocale hooks en ruw hakkende outtro. ‘Darkness’ is broedend, maar het korte ‘The Scribe’ met hoefgetrappel en verhalende stem is eigenlijk de intro voor ‘Gilgamesh’,
een mix van speed en epiek, om de schijf af te sluiten.
Kortom, groots materiaal voor liefhebbers van epische HM.
