RASPAIL: Dirge

Raspail was already founded in 2010 in Rome (Italy) with (ex)members of a.o. Novembre and Klimt 1918. Originally it was meant to be a tribute band to early Katatonia, old Paradise Lost and October Tide. The longer these guys played together, the more they developed their signature style of their own, although the sonorous guitar patterns still remind of – especially – Katatonia.
They have been working for a long time on the extensive songs. One can describe them as melodic doom/death metal, but there are loads of other elements as well, such as a large amount of mind-expanding sounds that are present in the back and they are true ear-candy. It adds an unearthly, psychedelic touch to the music, while the musicians refer to rural areas around Rome where ancient poets were inspired and came to exceptional results. Thus the lyrics are poetic (the title ‘The Nymph’s Wood Hymn To The Rising Sun’ will speak to everyone’s imagination) and the music floats above your head in a wonderful manner. On this bed of slow, ultra melancholic sounds, the very raucous grunts of Ianus are contrastingly desperate and intense. A song like ‘The Wanderer’ enchants us with soaring sounds, but they work with epic outbursts with growls and later quiescent passages in which spiritual ornaments pop up. The approach even reminds me a bit of Solstafir from time to time, because the songs have a considerable length and they come to full bloom by exploding in a ravishing, refined way. These almost psychedelic soundscapes – for instance in ‘We Should Not Grieve’ – seem like a guidance to the stars. Elements of post-rock and ambient are infiltrated in music which remains rough, pitch-black and heavy though. Even any blackened influences are not strange to them. ‘Ver Sacrum’ has a contemplative, solemn spoken part at the end. This is a Walhalla for aficionados of ultra melancholic sounds with momentum!

Raspail werd al in 2010 opgericht rond Rome (Italië) met (ex) leden van o.a. Novembre en Klimt 1918. Oorspronkelijk was dit als tribuut bedoeld aan vroege Katatonia, oude Paradise Lost en October Tide. Naarmate de heren langer samen speelden ontwikkelde zich een eigen stijl, al zijn de lillende, heldere gitaarpatronen nog steeds een hint aan – vooral - Katatonia.
Er is erg lang gewerkt aan de uitgebreide songs die men als melodieuze doom/death metal kan beschrijven, maar er zijn ook veel andere elementen, zoals een groot aantal geestverruimende klanken die een achterban vormen waar het mooi naar luisteren is. Het geeft de muziek een onaards, psychedelisch karakter, terwijl de muzikanten dwepen met de landelijke gebieden rond Rome waar vroegere dichters door geïnspireerd werden. De teksten zijn dan ook poëtisch (de titel ‘The Nymph’s Wood Hymn To The Rising Sun’ zal tot ieders verbeelding spreken) en de muziek zweeft op een heerlijke manier boven je hoofd. Op dit bedje van trage, weemoedige klanken klinkt de erg ruwe grunt van Ianus desperaat en intens. Een song als ‘The Wanderer’ maakt ons lekker met zwevende klanken, maar er wordt gewerkt met epische uitbarstingen met grunts en daarna verstilde passages waarin spirituele klanken opduiken. De aanpak doet me soms zelfs aan Solstafir denken, omdat de songs een behoorlijke lengte hebben en zich geraffineerd ontplooien tot volle wasdom. Dit welhaast psychedelische klanktapijt – bijvoorbeeld in ‘We Should Not Grieve’ – lijkt telkens een opgang naar de sterren te bewerkstelligen. Elementen van postrock en ambient worden verwerkt in songs die toch ruw, gitzwart en heavy overkomen. Zelfs enige zwartgeblakerde invloeden zijn hen niet vreemd. ‘Ver Sacrum’ heeft een beschouwend stuk plechtig gesproken tekst op het einde. Dit is een walhalla voor liefhebbers van ultra weemoedige klanken met stuwkracht! .
