CHROME MOLLY: Hoodoo Voodoo

Chrome Molly was in the eighties one of the many hopeful bands that were searching for success in the slipstream of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. They were lucky to support Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper, but nevertheless they failed to make an impact on a wider audience. That doesn’t mean that they had no quality to offer. Singer Steve Hawkins knows how to write and sing a hard rock song! Their 2013 comeback album ‘Gun Power Diplomacy’ was proof of that and it’s no different with this new release.
‘Hoodoo Voodoo’ sounds very ‘live’, but still sounds like a good studio recording. This is a very honest rocking album through a set of enjoyable songs. This is what the band says about the album: ‘While not strictly a concept album, the original idea was to create an album that conjured up the magic of listening to the great bands in the ‘80’s, with the riffs and tunes that shaped the band’. Chrome Molly rocks!

Chrome Molly was in de jaren tachtig één van de vele beloftevolle bands die het Engelse hardrocklandschap onveilig maakten. Alhoewel ze het ooit tot support van Ozzy Osbourne en Alice Cooper hebben geschopt, is de groep onder leiding van Steven Hawkins nooit echt doorgebroken. Dat is niet evenredig met de kwaliteit van wat ze brachten. Hawkins en de zijnen hebben wel degelijk verstand van hoe een vlotte en stevige melodieuze hardrock song dient te klinken.
In 2013 hebben ze dat nog eens overtuigend bevestigd met hun comeback plaat ‘Gun Power Diplomacy’ en dat doen ze opnieuw met deze ‘Hoodoo Voodoo’ met een stel lekker rockende songs zonder al te veel franjes en opgenomen met de spirit van de jaren tachtig: zoveel mogelijk live in de studio en zo weinig mogelijk toeters en bellen in het productionele departement. Dat belet de band niet om hecht en strak te klinken, maar het is geen kille computer gestuurde hechtheid. Chrome Molly klinkt warm en gedreven en geeft ons opnieuw de gewaarwording die we bij de opstanding van de new wave of British heavy metal ook al voelden. Dit is een goudeerlijke plaat die rockt als de beesten.
