AKOMA: Revangels

Danish band Akoma recorded already three EP’s and its history goes back to 2004. This is their first full CD and that makes them still a relative newcomer to the scene. The band has also live experience as support for Leave’s Eyes. It is clear from the very first notes that this a mature band and the classical soprano of singer Tanya Bell is an extra proof of that. The production credits by Alexander Krull (Leave’s Eyes, Atrocity) and a guest performance by Liv Kristine give the album that extra shine.
The epic songs are not breaking new boundaries, but that is not an evidence in a genre with so many contenders. The band uses orchestral arrangements but they manage to avoid an overwhelming bombast. The guitar riffs by Morten Bell get a lot of space without being too dominant in the sound balance. Tanya’s voice is really beautiful and sounds very nice against the metal arrangements. This is a very good album that we enjoy a lot and will spin again. This is heavenly music to listen to with a lot of musicality!

Alhoewel het Deense Akoma reeds een drietal EP’s opnam en een geschiedenis heeft die teruggaat tot 2004, kunnen we met de release van deze eerste full cd de groep toch als een relatieve nieuwkomer beschouwen in het genre van de symfonische metal. Ook op het live front heeft de groep al enige ervaring opgebouwd als support act van bijvoorbeeld Leave’s Eyes. Dat we niet met groentjes te maken hebben wordt vanaf de eerste noten duidelijk met de klassieke sopraan van zangeres Tanya Bell. De productie van Alexander Krull en het duet met Liv Kristine op het titelnummer geven de cd extra glans.
De epische nummers bulken niet van originaliteit, maar dat wordt in dit genre ook van langsom moeilijker. De orkestrale arrangementen zijn er wel, maar ze domineren niet en hebben niet dat bombastische gewicht dat we bij andere bands in het genre tegenkomen, de gitaarriffs van Morten H. Bell daarentegen krijgen alle ruimte, zonder echter het geluidsbeeld te domineren. De focus gaat echt wel naar de stem van Tanya die hemels mooi is, als je tenminste van een klassieke sopraan houdt. In combinatie met metal arrangementen blijven we dit zeer genietbaar vinden. Akoma levert een uitstekend werkstuk af dat we graag opnieuw laten spinnen. Zalige luistermuziek met een hoge graad van muzikaliteit.
