JOHN GARCIA: The Coyote Who Spoke In Tongues

Obviously we know John Garcia as front man of Kyuss, the legendary band who put stoner rock on the map. Furthermore the man was involved in Hermano, Slo-Burn, Unida and Vista Chino. In 2014 came finally the long awaited solo album ’John Garcia’ and that was a stunner. Three years later we have the successor ‘The Coyote Who Spoke In Tongues’, but it is not a regular album with new songs, but acoustic versions of nine songs from Garcia’s total oeuvre.
Yet they put a lot of efforts in these versions. You will notice that the arrangements are completely different and it seems as if we are listening to totally new songs in some of the cases. With the melancholic ‘Green Machine’ I had that feeling very strong for instance. Indeed, Kyuss songs are once again featured a lot. These stripped off versions shine a very different light on the compositions. Naturally the very idiosyncratic, sharp-as-a-knife voice of Garcia defines the whole thing, but he is supported by Ehren Groban on acoustic guitar, Mike Pygmie on bass and Greg Saenz on percussion. We hear piano in ‘The Hollingsworth Session’ and organ in the back in the Kyuss classic ‘Space Cadet’. Garcia often focuses on the softer timbre in his voice and that is tastefully regaled with strings in ‘El Rodeo’. They round off with the instrumental ‘Court Order’. Beautiful music to enjoy by a crackling fire.

John Garcia kennen we uiteraard als frontman van Kyuss vroeger, de legendarische band die stonerrock mee op de map zette. Verder dook de man op in Hermano, Slo-Burn, Unida en Vista Chino. In 2014 kwam dan eindelijk het langverwachte soloalbum ’John Garcia’ en dat was smullen geblazen. Drie jaar later is er de opvolger ‘The Coyote Who Spoke In Tongues’, maar het is geen regulier album met nieuwe songs, maar akoestische versies van negen songs uit Garcia’s totale oeuvre.
Toch is er heel wat werk in deze versies gekropen. Je merkt dat de arrangementen totaal anders zijn en het lijkt alsof we naar nieuwe nummers luisteren in sommige gevallen. Bij het weemoedige ‘Green Machine’ had ik dat al heel sterk. Want er wordt weer een flinke portie Kyuss uit de kast getrokken. Deze gestripte versies werpen een heel ander licht op het oeuvre. Natuurlijk trekt de zeer typische scherpe stem van Garcia de kar, maar hij wordt bijgestaan door Ehren Groban op akoestische gitaar, Mike Pygmie op bas en Greg Saenz op percussie. We horen ook nog piano in ‘The Hollingsworth Session’ en orgel op de achtergrond in de Kyuss kraker ‘Space Cadet’. Garcia laat uiteraard ook meer het zachtere timbre van zijn stem aan bod komen en dat wordt smaakvol aangevuld met strijkers in ‘El Rodeo’. Er wordt afgesloten met het instrumentale ‘Court Order’. Mooie muziek voor bij het knusse haardvuur.
