XANDRIA: Theater Of Dimensions

After ‘Sacrificium’ (2014), this is the second album recorded with the talented Dianne, and already the seventh in the career of these German symphonic metallers. To give the album more depth, they called some guest singers for help.
The opener sets the tone with loads of bombast, fast rhythms, soprano, melodic guitar, a quiet break. In ‘Death’ they add some folk elements in the heavier mix, in which Dianne rather uses her normal voice, alternating with choirs. ‘Forsaken Love’ is a semi power ballad with folk touch and an intimate break, after which ‘Call Of Destiny’ is a speedy melodic track with flashing keyboards, varied vocals, a rough drum driven break, vocal hook. A video was recorded for this song. After an ominous intro, ‘Murderers’ turns catchy heavy with Soilwork’s vocalist adding a raw grunt edge. ‘Night’ has a long quiet intro, but swells along the way into a powerful ballad, while ‘Walls’ sounds dark and epic, with mighty choirs and gripping melody. ‘Ship Of Doom’ opens with likewise choir, after which a sturdy riff is intertwined and some folk elements are smuggled in, while Dianne uses her soprano registers again. After that, Xandria delivers with ‘Ceili’ a great full blown folk/sympho instrumental track. ‘Sorrow’ is again tight, fast bombastic with delicious soprano, but with a slight folk vibe in the break, after which ‘Burn Me (Take Me To The Fire)’, arguably, is the most straightforward, catchy song with some oriental tinged male vocals as an extra. ‘Queen’ opens with acoustic guitar, grows stronger and ends with spoken word, after which the title track is truly a long, great and epical theatrical piece with vocal variety galore.
Those who liked ‘Sacrificium’, will love this darker, more varied ‘Theater’! Personally, I think some songs are too long, while the folk touch could be more frequent.

Na ‘Sacrificium’ (2014) is dit het tweede album opgenomen met de getalenteerde Dianne en reeds het zevende album in de discografie van deze Duitse symfonische metallers. Om het album wat extra kleur te geven werd de hulp van enkele gastzangers ingeroepen.
De opener zet meteen de toon met tonnen bombast, snelle ritmes, sopraan, melodieuze gitaar, een rustige break. In ‘Death’ voegen ze wat folk elementen toe in de steviger mix, waarin Dianne eerder haar normale stem gebruikt afgewisseld met koor. ‘Forsaken Love’ is een semi power ballad met folk toetsen met intimistische break., waarna ‘Call Of Destiny’ een speedy melodieus nummer met flitsende keyboards, afwisselende zang, een ruige drum gestuwde break, vocale hook. Een video werd voor dit nummer opgenomen.
Na een onheilspellende intro, wordt ‘Murderers’ catchy heavy waarbij de zanger van Soilwork een rauw grunt randje toevoegt. ‘Night’ heeft een lange rustige intro, maar zwelt gaandeweg aan tot een krachtige ballad, terwijl ‘Walls’ donker en episch klinkt met machtig koor en pakkende melodie. ‘Ship Of Doom’ opent met gelijkaardig koor, waarna een stevige riff ertussen gesmokkeld wordt en wat folk opduikt, terwijl Dianne weer haar sopraanregisters opentrekt. Daarna biedt Xandria met ‘Ceili’ een schitterende volwaardige folk symfo track. ‘Sorrow’ is dan weer strak, snelle bombast met heerlijke sopraan, maar met een lichte folk hint in de break, waarna ‘Burn Me (Take Me To The Fire), mijn inziens, het meest rechttoe rechtaan catchy nummer is, met wat oosters aandoende mannenstem als extra. ‘Queen’ opent met akoestische gitaar, wordt krachtiger en sluit af met parlando, waarna het titelnummer waarlijk een lang, groots en episch theatraal nummer is met een vocale veelzijdigheid.
Wie ‘Sacrificium’ goed vond, zal dit donkerder, meer gevarieerde ‘Theater’ prachtig vinden! Persoonlijk vind ik sommige nummers wat te lang en mocht het folk element wat vaker opduiken.
