VICTORIUS: Heart Of The Phoenix

After albums like, amongst others, ‘Dreamchaser’, this German power quintet presents its fourth album, ‘Heart Of The Phoenix’.
The opener chops furiously in with thundering drums, melodic vocal lines and a catchy chorus. ‘Hero’, of which a video clip was made, follows in the same vein, but more tight, with splashing guitar solo. Arguably a strange choice, for the next song, ‘Rainbow’, is far better, as well on the level of melody as the degree of catchiness. ‘Sword’ made me think somehow of Sacred Steel, while ‘Orion’ contains some sombre keyboards and slows down the fast pace we got so far, without forgetting the shredding guitar solo.
The title track is more epic in nature, while ‘Dragon King’ rushes on a fine riff with a great melodic break towards the end. ‘Hammer Of Justice’ is pretty speedy and that makes it, together with its catchy chorus, I think, the best song, though the fast ‘Iron Sky’ is hardly less good. ‘Virus’ mixes some electronic sounds in the power, while ‘Lightyears’ rather sober, closes semi ballad-like with additional female vocals.
Nothing extraordinary, nothing revolutionary, but simply good power metal with a great guitar player.

Na albums als, onder meer, ‘Dreamchaser’, stelt het Duitse power kwintet met ‘Heart Of The Phoenix’ zijn vierde album voor.
De opener hakt er furieus in met donderende drums, melodieuze zanglijnen en een catchy refrein. ‘Hero’, waarvan een video clip werd gemaakt, volgt in dezelfde lijn, maar strakker met spetterende gitaarsolo. Een rare keuze, want het volgend nummer , ‘Rainbow’, is merkelijk beter, zowel qua melodie als de mate waarin het catchy is. ‘Sword’ doet ergens aan Sacred Steel denken, terwijl ‘Orion’ sombere keyboards bevat en de snelheid van de vorige songs drukt, zonder de flitsende gitaarsolo achterwege te laten.
Het titelnummer heeft een epische inslag, terwijl ‘Dragon King’ voortsnelt op een prima riff met een prima melodieuze break naar het einde toe. ‘Hammer Of Justice’ is nogal speedy en dat maakt het, samen met zijn catchy refrein, mijn inziens, het beste nummer, al doet het snelle ‘Iron Sky ‘ er niet veel voor onder. ‘Virus’ mengt wat elektronische geluiden onder de power, terwijl ‘Lightyears’ eerder bezadigd, semi balladesk afsluit met extra vrouwenstem.
Niets uitzonderlijks, niets revolutionair, maar gewoon goeie power metal met straffe gitarist.
