CNOC AN TURSA: The Forty Five

Four years ago we had our first encounter with Cnoc An Tursa, an idiosyncratic band hailing from Scotland that – just as their blood brothers of Winterfylleth – honoured the folklore and historian legacy of their homeland with intense folk/black metal. The debut ’The Giants Of Auld’ was played here many times at maximum volume and thus we were at the tiptoe of expectations to find out more about the successor ‘The Forty Five’.
That appears to be a concept album about the Jacobite Uprising in 1745, waged by Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. The Scots battered against the English oppression of George II then. This subject perfectly fits the intention to honour the history of Falkirk and surroundings in poetic – and this time battle-like – lyrics. The band includes now three (ex) Saor members and bassist Tony Dunn comes from Falloch, while he adds any clean vocals as well. This is the first album on which the fury properly leads to pulverizing blastbeats and on the other hand also clean, sturdy vocals can be heard. With the atmospheric, cinematic intro ‘Will Ye No Come Back’ we instantly find ourselves in the midst of the Scottish Highlands. Next the impressive ‘The Yellow Locks Of Charlie’ (watch the video clip!) initially starts with acoustic plucking guitars, but then follows an epic outburst with poignant rough vocals that leaves us in awe.
This time the songs are way much longer and consequently they include much more breaks and atmospheric passages. That is a plus, since we suggested to use that more frequently in our review of the debut album. By adding some symphonic arrangements, this album gets the allures of a compelling soundtrack, without losing its heaviness. Guitar skills and leads are always very melodious, with typical folk melodies and a kind of melancholy that really moves us. Sturdy harmony vocals are rebellious and proclaiming from time to time, but on the other hand they might lead to a moment of reflection. They worked a lot more with contrasts and that is why ‘The Forty Five’ comes a step closer to the ultimate pagan metal record. Just listen to the lengthy stunner ‘The Last Of The Stuarts’ that occludes this record in a captivating, heroic manner. This is pagan metal with depth and intensity and consequently it is a must have for everybody with a soft spot for this genre. Amazing!

Vier jaar geleden maakten we kennis met Cnoc An Tursa, een eigenzinnige band uit Schotland die – net als hun bloedbroeders Winterfylleth – de folklore en het geschiedkundig erfgoed van de thuisbasis alle eer aan doet met doorleefde folky black metal. Het debuut ’The Giants Of Auld’ werd hier grijs gedraaid en we waren dan ook razend benieuwd wat de opvolger ‘The Forty Five’ zou brengen.
Dat is een conceptalbum over de ‘Jacobite Uprising’ in 1745, geleid door Charles Edward Stuart, beter bekend als Bonnie Prince Charlie. De Schotten verzetten zich toen tegen de Engelse overheersing van George II. Dit thema sluit perfect aan bij de intentie om de geschiedenis van Falkirk en omgeving te eren in de poëtische – en ditmaal strijdvaardige – teksten. De band bestaat nu uit drie (ex) Saor leden en bassist Tony Dunn komt van Falloch, terwijl hij ook cleane vocalen toevoegt. Dit is het eerste album waarop de furie gevat wordt in heuse blastbeats en anderzijds ook klare, kloeke zang te horen is. Met de atmosferische, filmische intro ‘Will Ye No Come Back’ wanen we ons meteen op de Schotse Hooglanden. Waarna het imposante ‘The Yellow Locks Of Charlie’ (bekijk de videoclip!) aanvankelijk nog tokkelende gitaren laten horen, maar ons dan een epische uitval met bijtende ruwe zang presenteert waar we meteen van houden.
De songs zijn ditmaal veel langer en bijgevolg heeft men veel meer breaks en atmosferische passages ingelast. Dat is een pluspunt, zoals we in de bespreking van het debuut al aangaven als wens om dit meer uit te werken. Met de toevoeging van enige symfonische arrangementen krijgt dit album de allures van een meeslepende soundtrack, zonder aan heftigheid in te boeten. Het gitaarwerk is ook altijd erg melodieus, met typische folk melodieën en een bepaalde weemoed die ons erg aanspreekt. Kloeke samenzang mag soms verkondigend zijn, andermaal is het een moment van reflectie. Er wordt meer gewerkt met contrasten en zo is ‘The Forty Five’ de gewenste stap dichter bij ultieme pagan metal. Luister maar eens naar het lange pronkstuk ‘The Last Of The Stuarts’ dat dit album op beklijvende heroïsche wijze afsluit. Dit is pagan metal met diepgang en dan ook verplichte aanschaf voor iedereen die het genre een warm hart toedraagt. Fantastisch!
