This album has two sides. One is brutal hard rock that sounds like a primal scream at its most extreme. The other side is more accessible because of the use of saxophone played by guest player Matt Darriau. It’s still experimental and harsh, but it sounds more like some of the contemporary jazz things. The vocals by Ev Gold sound like a man crying out frustration and desperation, not knowing where to go or what to do.
As a duo the band sounds very basic but still very intense with a sound that is worthy of the ‘stoner’ label. This American duo is not suited for candlelight suppers, but digested at the right moment with the right mindset, this is a hallucinating, surreal sound experience… My favourite tracks are the ones with the saxophone. The sax blends perfectly with the edgy sound of the duo and gives it more depth, less desperation, more hope… This is already their 4th album and the band should be situated in the New York alternative scene.

Dit album heeft twee kanten. De ene is brutaal en klinkt zoals een oerkreet in zijn meest extreme vorm. De andere kant is meer toegankelijk vanwege het gebruik van saxofoon, gespeeld door gastmuzikant Matt Darriau. Het blijft dan nog experimenteel en rauw, maar heeft een toets van hedendaagse jazz. De stem van Ed Gold spuwt de boosheid, frustratie en wanhoop uit van iemand die niet weet waaruit of waarheen.
Als duo klinkt de band heel basic, maar toch is er die intense sound die aanleunt bij het stoner genre. Dit Amerikaanse duo is beslist niet geschikt voor een rustige avond bij de haard met een glas wijn, maar indien beluisterd op het juiste moment en de juiste ingesteldheid is dit een hallucinante en surrealistische sonore trip. Mijn favoriete nummers zijn deze waarin de saxofoon wordt gebruikt omdat ze op een sterke manier de scherpe kant van het duo combineren met meer diepgang, minder ontreddering en meer hoop… Dit is al het vierde album van Cinema Cinema en de we situeren de groep in de alternatieve scene van New York.
