WHITE WILLOW: Future Hopes

White Willow happens to be a Norwegian art rock band, active since 1995 in ever changing line-up. They describe their music as pop songs stretched to pointless lengths and regaled with weird sounding instruments. The beautiful artwork is obviously done by Roger Dean, with a cover that reminds us of Yes and Uriah Heep.
The album kicks off with two rather compact songs. We hear soaring synthesizers and stately horns in the title track, relished with sweet female vocals. It is calm music, while only drums add a heavier accent for a moment. ‘Silver & Gold’ is also very relax. ‘In Dim Days’ appears to be the first lengthy track (eleven minutes) with loads of bleebs, calm female chants and ditto prog solo on guitar. There are few heavier riffs, later a nice solo on a bed of mechanical sounds and a soaring passage with organ. ‘Where There Was Sea There Is Abyss’ is just a kind of spatial intro for the next mammoth composition. ‘A Scarred View’ is eighteen minutes long and turns into my favourite. Initially it smoothly ripples on with fairy-like childish vocals, but later we have plenty of beautiful solos on guitars and keyboards. The CD version has two bonus tracks. First a really not recognizable version of ‘Animal Magnetism’ from The Scorpions which gets very atmospheric, with a blaring clarinet solo. ‘Damnation Valley’ is piano based and instrumental. This is quite a personal approach of progressive rock from this Norwegian outfit.

White Willow is een Noorse art rock groep, actief sinds 1995 in wisselende bezetting. Ze omschrijven hun progressieve rock als uitgesponnen popsongs voorzien van vreemdsoortige instrumenten. Het mooie artwork is overduidelijk van Roger Dean met een cover die aan Yes en Uriah Heep doet denken.
Het album vangt aan met twee vrij korte tracks. Zwevende synths en statige blazers horen we in het titelnummer, ingekleurd met lieflijke vrouwenzang. Het is kalme muziek, waarbij de drums even een harder accent inbrengen. Ook ‘Silver & Gold’ is erg relax. ‘In Dim Days’ is de eerste lange track (elf minuten) met veel bliebjes, brave zang en een kalme progsolo op gitaar. Er komen wat zwaardere riffs in, later een knappe solo op een bedje van mechanische klanken en een zwevende passage met orgel. ‘Where There Was Sea There Is Abyss’ is in feite een spacey intro voor de volgende mammoetcompositie. ‘A Scarred View’ duurt achttien minuten en is mijn favoriet. Het kabbelt aanvankelijk wat voort met feeërieke kinderlijke vrouwenzang, maar daarna komen en veel mooie solo’s op gitaar en toetsen. De CD versie heeft nog twee bonussongs. Vooreerst een onherkenbare versie van ‘Animal Magnetism’ van The Scorpions dat hier bijzonder atmosferisch wordt, met een schetterende klarinetsolo. ‘Damnation Valley’ is op piano geënt en instrumentaal. Best een persoonlijke aanpak van progressieve rock door deze Noren.
