HELLWELL: Behind The Demon's Eyes

After his debut in 2012 with ‘Beyond The Boundaries of Sin’, Mark Shelton, founder of Manilla Road, strikes back with a sophomore effort. This time MR’s drummer Randy Foxe is in the line-up as well and Mark states that this result made him sometimes think of stuff that could have been on the ‘Out Of The Abyss’ album.
‘Lightwave’ opens pretty epic in MR style, but the vocals are rather rough, almost grunt.
‘Necromantio’ is pretty hectic heavy, but the vocals are, this time, recognizable, with delicious break with solo in its midst. The long epic ‘To Serve Man’ is MR with royal helpings of keys and even if Mark uses his raw/grunt voice, his typical nasal sound of MR is present as well. Halfway, there’s a bombastic break with catchy keys, followed by a speedy passage. ‘It’s Alive’ is a lot shorter, heavy doom with organ, reminding of MR’s ‘The Deluge’. Eerie keys in the intro of ‘Galaxy’ transit into a heavy as hell song with again that mix of grunt and clean. Closer ‘Hawthorn’, with fragile piano intro, has also an epical length, transiting through organ into a song that gets heavier and heavier along the way and fades out with experimental keys.
Fans of Manilla Road shouldn’t hesitate a second, this is heavier stuff in the same vein.

Na zijn debuut in 2012 met ‘Beyond The Boundaries of Sin’ komt Mark Shelton, oprichter van Manilla Road, terug met een opvolger. Deze keer is MR’s drummer Randy Foxe ook van de partij en volgens Mark deed het resultaat hem soms denken aan dingen die op ‘Out Of The Abyss’ hadden kunnen staan.
‘Lightwave’ opent vrij episch in MR stijl, maar met een rauwe, bijna grunt, stem. ‘Necromantio’ is eerder hectisch heavy, maar de stem is deze keer herkenbaar, met heerlijke break met solo halverwege. Het lange epos ‘To Serve Man’ is MR met royale keyboards en al gebruikt Mark een ruige/grunt stem, is zijn typisch nasale van MR ook aanwezig. Halverwege zit een bombastische break met catchy toetsen, gevolgd door een speedy stuk. ‘It’s Alive’ is een pak korter, heavy doom met orgel, dat aan MR’s ‘The Deluge’ doet denken. Bevreemdende toetsen in de intro van ‘Galaxy’ gaan over in een loodzware heavy track met weer die mix van grunt en clean. Afsluiter ‘Hawthorn’, met breekbare piano intro, heeft weer een epische lengte, gaat over via orgel in een nummer dat allengs heaviër en heaviër wordt en uitdooft met experimentele toetsen.
Fans van Manilla Road moeten geen seconde aarzelen, Hellwell is straffer spul in dezelfde lijn.
