HELION PRIME: Idem

This US metal band took its name from a planet in the ‘Chronicles Of Riddick’ movie series, featuring Vin Diesel and released their self-financed debut last year. Since then there have been a few changes in the line-up (a.o. a new guitar player and singer), but their album got noticed by AFM and is now available for a wider audience.
After an electronic intro track, ‘Equation’ is a heavy melodic affair with good female vocals. ‘Life’ mixes some melodic death under the HM, fine solo in its midst. Keyboard kicks off ‘Black Hole’, which then speedy rushes forward, while ‘Place’ is a half power ballad. ‘Kill’ is a lot heavier, with death edge with some grunt on top, then the fast ‘Oceans’ kicks in, with shredding guitar solo, but still I’m not really impressed by the vocals, though the mix could be causing that problem. ‘Moon-Watcher’ is fine, with catchy chorus, but can’t really convince either. ‘Apollo’ is a faster track, with a nice break, but still the vocals lack in force, while the closing ‘Live And Die’ starts sensitive with ditto voice and expands later with speed and male vocals. Two demo versions of tracks included here come as a bonus.
All in all, a fine album, but too soon forgotten.

Deze US metal band ontleent zijn naam aan een planeet uit de filmreeks ‘Chronicles of Riddick’ met Vin Diesel en bracht zijn debuut vorig jaar uit in eigen beheer. Sindsdien zijn er wijzigingen geweest in de bezetting (o.a. andere gitarist en zangeres ), maar hun album werd opgemerkt door AFM en is nu beschikbaar voor een wijder publiek.
Na een elektronische intro, is ‘Equation’ een heavy melodisch ding met goeie vrouwelijke stem. ‘Life’ mixt wat melodieuze death onder de HM, prima solo halverwege. Keyboard trapt ‘Black Hole’ af, dat daarna speedy voortsnelt, terwijl ‘Place’ een halve powerballad is. ‘Kill’ is een pak heviger, death-achtig met extra grunt, daarna komt het snelle ‘Oceans’, met vingervlugge gitaarsolo, maar ik ben nog steeds niet echt onder de indruk van de vocalen, hoewel de mix dat probleem kan veroorzaken. ‘Moon-Watcher’ is best lekker, met catchy refrein, maar weet evenmin echt te overtuigen. ‘Apollo’ is een sneller nummer, met mooie break, maar nog steeds is de stem wat ondermaats, terwijl de afsluiter ‘Live And Die’ gevoelig begint, dito stem en daarna uitwaaiert met mannenstem.
Twee demo versies van opgenomen nummers sluiten als bonus af.
Best lekker album, maar te snel vergeten.
