PALE KING: Monolith Of The Malign

Pale King was started in 2016 by two Wombbath members with the aim to create melodic, old school death metal. They took their moniker from an unfinished novel by David Foster Wallace.
‘Last Hour’ is indeed a nice chunk of melodic death, with space for slow and rough passages and mostly catchy riffing. ‘Horrors’ delivers the same melodic brutality, while the melody in the chorus adds a majestic touch to it. In the title track there are beautiful riffs and melodies as well, in shrill contrast with the raw grunt. Then comes ‘The Curse’ of course with melody too, but rather in the undertow, while the chopping drums are rather prominent. Maybe a flaw in the production? Majestic keys for the intro of ‘Intentions’, switching into melodic death with a quiet break in its midst, while the keys return, be it less striking, in the outro. I won’t use the word progressive, but the arrangements of Pale King are diverse and sometimes surprising. This being said, next two songs are rather brutal, but closing ‘Haunted Palace’ displays one last time mix of brutality, melody and great arrangements.
A successful Gothenburg journey to the nineties.

Pale King werd in 2016 opgericht door twee Wombbath leden met als doel melodieuze, old school death metal te maken. Ze ontleenden de bandnaam aan een onafgewerkte roman van David Foster Wallace.
‘Last Hour’ is inderdaad een lekkere brok melodieuze death, met plaats voor tragere en rauwere passages en vooral catchy riffs. ‘Horrors’ levert dezelfde melodieuze brutaliteit, terwijl de melodie in het refrein het een majestueus karakter verleent. Ook in het titelnummer zitten prachtige riffs en melodieën, in schrille tegenstelling tot de rauwheid van de grunt. Daarna heeft ‘The Curse’ natuurlijk ook melodie, maar in minder prominente vorm, spelend op de achtergrond, terwijl de hakkende drums meer opvallen.
Misschien gewoon een mindere productie? Majestueuze keyboard voor de intro van ‘Intentions’, die overgaat in melodieuze death met halverwege een rustige break, terwijl de keys nog eens terugkeren, maar dan minder opvallend, in de outtro. Ik zal niet zover gaan het woord progressief te gebruiken, maar de arrangementen van Pale King zijn divers en soms verrassend. Dit gezegd zijnde, zijn de twee volgende nummer redelijk brutaal, maar afsluiter ‘Haunted Palace’ demonstreert nog één keer de mix van brutaliteit, melodie en verrassende arrangementen.
Een geslaagd Gothenburg tripje naar de jaren negentig!
