Through the years Anathema has become a different band, but it sounds like a natural evolution. Today the band deals mainly in atmospheric songs with keyboard dominated arrangements and dreamy vocals. ‘The Optimist’ is a sequel to their 2001 album ‘A Fine Day to Exist’ and tells the story of what becomes of the character that disappeared at the end of that story. According to Vincent Cavanagh, recording with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Super Fury Animals, Belle & Sabastian) was a big influence on the album and it was his suggestion to record live in the studio.
One thing is for sure: this band sounds like a real band! There’s a nice flow in the album that starts with a short electronic track that is not representative for the rest of the album at all. Overall there’s an ambient atmosphere to the songs, but there’s enough variation to keep it interesting. The long final track ‘Back To The Start’ is a climax with a lot of tension. It’s clear that Anathema have made one of their better albums. It is available in many different formats and coloured vinyl.

Met de jaren is Anathema een andere band geworden, maar al bij al heeft de groep een natuurlijke evolutie doorgemaakt. Vandaag maken ze atmosferische muziek met veelal door keyboards gedomineerde arrangementen en dromerige vocalen. ‘The Optimist’ is een vervolg op hun album ‘A Fine Day To Exist’ uit 2001 en vertelt wat er gebeurd is met het personage dat op het einde van dat verhaal verdween. Volgens Vincent Cavanagh was opnemen met producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Super Fury Animals, Belle & Sabastian) een revelatie, het was namelijk zijn idee om de plaat live in de studio op te nemen.
Eén ding is zeker: hier is een hechte band aan het werk. De plaat begint met een elektronische stukje dat helemaal niet representatief is voor het vervolg van de plaat. Muzikaal baadt nagenoeg het hele album in een ambiente sfeer, maar met voldoende variatie om het interessant te houden. Met de finale ‘Back To The Start’ slaagt Anathema erin om een spannende climax op te bouwen als orgelpunt voor het album. Dit is voorwaar een van hun betere platen! Ze is te koop in verschillende formaten en gekleurde vinyls.
