ALL BUT ONE: Square One

Mate Bodor, guitarist in Alestorm, began this project to test the borders of modern metal. He found buddies in Alestorm, Heaven Shall Burn, When Our Time Comes … and together they created something new, respecting their roots in metal.
The title track kicks off with polished Swedish death with clean vocals and some piano on top, quite enjoyable. ‘Persistance’ continues in the same vein, with some raw vocals as extra, but in ‘Good’ only clean. Complex structures and virtuoso guitar are the red thread here. ‘Vivid’ is also complex melodic with alternating clean and raw vocals. ‘Fuel’ is a short quiet haven, introducing ‘White Lies’, again the complex metalcore/death angle. Then ‘Reaper’ is arguably the roughest, heaviest song on this platter. After the more melodic ‘Sale’, the long ‘Serenity’ closes.
Quite easy listening virtuoso metalcore due to the dominating clean vocals. Fine platter without real highlights!

Mate Bodor, gitarist bij Alestorm, begon dit project om de grenzen van moderne metal te verleggen. Hij vond gelijkgestemden in Alestorm, Heaven Shall Burn, When Our Time Comes … en samen maken ze iets nieuws, terwijl ze hun metal roots respecteren.
Het titelnummer trapt af met gepolijste Zweedse death met clean vocalen en wat piano bovenop, erg genietbaar. ‘Persistance’ gaat in die lijn verder, met wat rauwe stem als extra, maar in ‘Good’ weer enkel clean. Complexe structuren en virtuoze gitaar vormen de rode draad hier. ‘Vivid’ !s ook complex melodieus met afwisselende clean en rauwe stem. ‘Fuel’ is een kort rustpunt dat ‘White Lies’ inleidt, met weer de complexe metalcore/death invalshoek. Daarna is ‘Reaper’ waarschijnlijk de ruigste, meest heavy track op deze schijf. Na het meer melodieuze ‘Sale’, sluit het lange ‘Serenity’ af.
Erg toegankelijke virtuoze metalcore door de overheersende cleane stem. Fijn album zonder echte uitschieters!
