WOLFPAKK: Wolves Reign

Since the inception of Wolfpakk in 2011, this is already the fourth album resulting from the collaboration between Michael Voss (Mad Max, Michael Schenker) and Mark Sweeney (ex-Crystal Ball). Again a pack of guest wolves were gathered to bring live to the songs in a mix of hard rock and melodic metal.
‘Falling’ is a fairly good opener, nice up tempo, solo, but ‘Run’ is more convincing with rougher vocals and catchy hook. ‘Blood Brothers’ visits the Indian theme, with some fitting backings, while Biff (Saxon) pushes the song, strong! The title track begins with keyboards and turns into a fine power ballad. Harpsichord opens ‘No Remorse’ which contains some light speedy bombast and a sensitive break. Comes ‘Animal’, rocking full throttle, while ‘Hawk’ goes epic metal. In view of its name, I expected something similar in ’10 Commandments’, but it turned out to be pretty average speed, with eastern tinged break. The long ‘Mother Earth’ with plucking bass and persistent drums, is a rather slow epically built up piece. ‘Tomorrowland’ is another ballad with obligate solo, while the closer takes us catchy and heavy with great guitar solo to the exit.
A bit too varied material, in my opinion, but nevertheless a fine album.

Sinds de oprichting van Wolfpakk in 2011 is dit reeds het vierde album dat ontstond uit de samenwerking tussen Michael Voss (Mad Max, Michael Schenker) en Mark Sweeney (ex-Crystal Ball). Weer werd een horde gastwolven verzameld om de nummers tot leven te brengen in een mix van hardrock en melodieuze metal.
‘Falling’ is een vrij goede opener, mooi uptempo, solo, maar ‘Run’ is overtuigender met catchy hook en ruigere stem. ‘Blood Brothers’ zit in het Indiaanse thema, met bijpassend achtergrondgezang, terwijl Biff (Saxon) het nummer draagt, sterk! Het titelnummer begint met keyboard en wordt gaandeweg een prima powerballad. Klavecimbel opent ‘No Remorse’ dat licht speedy bombast bevat, evenals een gevoelige break. Bij ‘Animal’ gaat het voluit rockend, terwijl ‘Hawk’ de epische metal kaart trekt. Gezien de titel, verwachtte ik bij ’10 Commandments’ iets in dezelfde aard, maar het bleek een vrij modale speed track te zijn, wel met oosters getinte break. Het lange ‘Mother Earth’, met pompende bas en indringend drumpatroon, is een eerder traag episch opgebouwd stuk.
‘Tomorrowland’ is nog een ballad met obligate solo, terwijl de afsluiter ons stevig en catchy met prima gitaarsolo uitgeleide doet.
Een beetje te gevarieerd materiaal, volgens mij, maar niettemin een fijn album.
