DRAGONFORCE: Reaching Into Infinity

The seventh album by multi-national band Dragonforce introduces new Italian drummer Gee Anzalone and is once again produced by Jens Borgen. After six years and three studio albums, singer Marc Hudson is well integrated into the band and participates as a writer too, although the main writers are still Frédérik Leclercq and Sam Totman. The album’s most prominent characteristics are the speed of the rhythms by which the songs are played, combined with a strong sense for melody. Technically these guys know how to master this kind of arrangements, so there’s again a lot to enjoy for the fans of the genre.
Now and then the band surprises with complex and stunning instrumental passages or with a strong ballad. ‘The Edge Of The World’ clocks in at eleven minutes and is the longest track the band ever recorded, hence the reference to progressive metal in the heading of this review. Needless to state that the sound is superb, as is the playing. The band even manages to make this genre sound fresh and their performance is full of conviction and inspiration. So, this is a better than average album altogether!

Het zevende album van de multinationale band Dragonforce introduceert de nieuwe Italiaanse drummer Gee Anzalone en werd opnieuw geproduceerd door Jens Borgen. Na zes jaar en drie studioplaten is zanger Marc Hudson goed in de groep geïntegreerd en levert zelfs een bijdrage als schrijver, alhoewel het leeuwenaandeel van de nummers nog steeds wordt geschreven door het duo Leclercq/Totman. De meest opvallende kenmerken van deze plaat zijn de verbluffende snelheden waarmee de arrangementen worden gespeeld en dat gecombineerd met veel zin voor melodie. Technisch zijn deze gasten sterk en weten perfect hoe ze dit goed moeten laten klinken.
Af en toe verrassen ze met complexe en verbluffende instrumentale passages of met een sterke ballade. ‘The Edge Of The World’ duurt maar liefst elf minuten en is het langste stuk dat de groep ooit heeft opgenomen, vandaar ook de verwijzing naar progressieve metal in de hoofding. Onnodig te benadrukken dat alles perfect klinkt en de uitvoering van de arrangementen is overtuigend en geïnspireerd. Dragonforce slaagt erin om dit genre toch nog eens fris te laten klinken, en dat resulteert in een album dat boven het gemiddelde uitstijgt.
