ODROERIR: Das Erbe Unserer Ahnen

Since the nineties, Menhir guitarist Fix is also active in Odroerir, a band with whom he explores the calmer segments of pagan metal. No thundering drums or blastbeats, but genuine respect for the ancestors. In this case those are hailing from Thuringia (Germany). Those who do not know ‘Hildebrandslied’ from Menhir, should discover this cult gem instantly now! Odroerir earlier released extensive interpretations of the Edda in the shape of ‘Götterlieder I’ (2005) and ‘Götterlieder II’, but ‘Das Erbe Unserer Ahnen’ is more of a solo album from Fix with many guests of the German pagan metal scène.
Bathory’s Viking albums are still the main inspiration, but this totally acoustic album mainly features the ethnic and folkloristic sounds. The songs are lengthy soundscapes in which sounds of nature, ethnic (choir) chants, acoustic guitars, violin, mandolin, mouth harp; flute and shawm (schalmei) are featured. For the greatest part it is instrumental and Odroerir manages to present quite a self-willed and unique version of pagan metal to the listener. In despite of the introvert character, it never gets boring and the authentic, folkloristic atmosphere is created in a proper manner. People who appreciate collectives such as XIV Dark Centuries, Fimbulvet, Gernotshagen and Wardruna, should surely check this out! Menhirgitarist Fix is sinds de jaren negentig ook actief in Odroerir, een band waarmee hij de kalmere segmenten van pagan metal etaleert. Geen donderende drums of blastbeats, maar eerlijk respect voor de voorouders, die in dit geval uit Thüringen (Duitsland) komen. Wie ‘Hildebrandslied’ van Menhir niet kent, mag deze cultparel nu meteen gaan ontdekken! Odroerir bracht eerder lijvige interpretaties van de Edda uit in de vorm van ‘Götterlieder I’ (2005) en ‘Götterlieder II’, maar ‘Das Erbe Unserer Ahnen’ is eerder een soloalbum van Fix met tal van gasten uit de Duitse pagan metalscène.
Bathory’s Vikingalbums vormen nog steeds een inspiratiebron, maar dit volledig akoestische album laat de etnische en folkloristische geluiden centraal staan. De songs zijn lange klanklandschappen waarin natuurgeluiden, etnische (koor)zang, akoestische gitaren, viool, mandoline, mondharp, fluit en schalmei de hoofdrol opeisen. Grotendeels instrumentaal weet Odroerir een eigenzinnige versie van pagan metal aan de luisteraar voor te stellen. Ondanks het ingetogen karakter verveelt het nergens en wordt de authentieke folkloristische sfeer alle eer toebedeeld. Wie collectieven als XIV Dark Centuries, Fimbulvet, Gernotshagen en Wardruna weet te waarderen, moet zeker ook een gok wagen en dit beluisteren! Er komt een versie uit met extra dvd en die raden wij zeker aan. Je ziet de mooie dvd cover boven dit artikel. Enige toelichting bij het reguliere aanbod is bij deze – niet-politieke en eerlijke aanpak – een toegevoegde waarde.
