BLACK MESSIAH: Walls Of Vanaheim

While previous album ’Heimweh’ happened to be a fine collection of fetching pagan metal songs without a proper story (although they all dealt with mythology), Black Messiah once again took the challenge to create a prestigious concept album as seventh feat. And there is even more: ‘Walls Of Vanaheim’ is the sequel of ‘First War Of The World’ (2009) and that can be seen as their biggest success. Thus it is no surprise that the approach – music-wise and lyrically - has many similarities with that stunner of the booming era of Viking metal.
We get no less than five quarters of an hour inciting pagan metal, with influences from blackened art during its most bellicose moments, but on the other hand very melodious and melancholic passages as well. It is music that will also appeal to power metal fans, due to its strong melodies and catchiness. Band leader Zagan relishes some of the songs with his amazing violin skills (sometimes folky, other times melancholic), while guitar solos honour the great tradition of pure classic heavy metal. We are involved in the story in a wonderful manner by narrator Tom Zahner who gets moments of glory after nearly every lengthy song, telling the story of Odin who calls for battle against Vanaheim, after being confronted with the severed head of the giant Mime. This led to the second battle, followed by the unity of Ases and Vanir under one flag. As usual with this sympathetic German band, they sing some songs in English, some in German language, but it does not weaken the flow of the amazing crafted record. That’s why ‘Walls Of Vanaheim’ is engrossing from start to finish and consequently it does not have to remain in the shadow of ‘First War Of The World’. Highly recommended!

Terwijl vorig album ’Heimweh’ een welgesmaakte collectie aanstekelijke pagan metal songs bevatte zonder overheersend verhaal (wel allemaal over mythologie), ging Black Messiah voor het zevende album terug de uitdaging aan om een prestigieus conceptalbum te creëren. Sterker nog, ‘Walls Of Vanaheim’ is het vervolg op ‘First War Of The World’ uit 2009 en dat blijft tenslotte toch hun grootste succes. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de aanpak – muzikaal zowel als tekstueel – veel gelijkenissen vertoont met die kanjer uit de ‘booming’ era van Viking metal.
Vijf kwartier opzwepende pagan metal valt ons ten deel, met invloeden van zwartgeblakerde kunst in de meest strijdvaardige momenten, maar anderzijds ook erg melodieuze en weemoedige passages. Muziek die trouwens ook bij power metal fans in de smaak zal vallen door zijn sterke melodieën. Bandleider Zagan kleurt tal van songs met zijn vioolspel (soms hups, dan weer weemoedig), terwijl gitaarsolo’s wenken naar klassieke heavy metal. We worden op een bijzonder uitnodigende manier het verhaal in getrokken door verteller Tom Zahner, welke na elke – behoorlijk lange – compositie de ruimte krijgt om het verhaal van Odin te doen die ten strijde trekt tegen Vanaheim nadat de reus Mime op gruwelijke wijze onthoofd is. Dit zal leiden tot een tweede strijd waarna de Asen en Vanir verenigd worden onder één gezag. Zoals we van de Duitse sympathieke band gewend zijn, wisselen zij songs in het Engels en het Duits af, terwijl de flow der songs uitmuntend uitgewerkt is. Met als gevolg dat ‘Walls Of Vanaheim’ boeit van begin tot einde en zeker niet in de schaduw van ‘First War Of The World’ dient te blijven staan. Een aanrader!
