ATLANTEAN KODEX: The Annihilation Of Bavaria (2CD/DVD)

With the albums ‘The Golden Bough’ (2010) and especially ‘The White Goddess’ (2013), German epic metal outfit Atlantean Kodex already caught the attention and caused a fuzz among fans of traditional heavy metal with a pinch of doom. Typical material for the audience of Keep It True and events like that. Influences of Manowar and Bathory are obvious, but the lengthy compositions always charm us in one way or another.
Now there is an official live registration of a German concert in November 2015. Even though the band already released limited editions of several live albums, this ‘The Annihilation Of Bavaria’ is recommended, because almost both the albums are played live in their entirety with excellent audio quality. One can even find a new song (‘Kodex Battalions’) in the set list. It is funny to hear how much the middle part of ‘White Goddess Unveiled’ is akin to Manowar’s ‘Bridge Of Death’. The CD version as well as the vinyl edition comes with a DVD, but this one was not included in the promo package. Thus we cannot write our thoughts about it. Based on what we did hear, it is worth your money when you are into traditional epic metal.

Met de albums ‘The Golden Bough’ (2010) en vooral ‘The White Goddess’ (2013) wisten de Duitse epische metallers Atlantean Kodex de aandacht al aardig te trekken van fans van traditionele heavy metal met een snuifje doom. Geknipt materiaal voor bezoekers van Keep It True en dergelijke. Invloeden van Manowar en Bathory liggen er vingerdik op, maar de lange composities weten op één of andere manier toch steeds te charmeren.
Nu is er een officiële live registratie van een Duits concert van november 2015. Ook al bracht de band eerder al gelimiteerde live albums uit, dan raden we wel ‘The Annihilation Of Bavaria’ aan omdat bijna de volledig albums live gebracht worden met goede audiokwaliteit. Er is in de vorm van ‘Kodex Battalions’ zelfs een nieuw nummer in de setlist. Grappig om te horen hoe het middenstuk van ‘White Goddess Unveiled’ heel sterk lijkt op dat van Manowar’s ‘Bridge Of Death’. Zowel cd als vinyluitgave worden begeleid van een dvd, maar die hoort niet bij het promomateriaal, dus kunnen we ons daarover niet uitspreken. Op basis van wat we konden horen is dit wel een investering waard voor fans van traditionele epische metal.
