UNLEASH THE ARCHERS: Apex

Unleash The Archers is already around for ten years and they celebrate this with their fourth album ‘Apex’, more or less two years after their ‘Time Stands Still’.
The long opener sets the tone: thundering drums, shrieking guitar, long break, grunts next to Brittney’s voice in a fast, melodic track. Catchy ‘Shadow Guide’ is more powerful and rocks more, with Brittney reminding somehow of Warlock/Doro, while ‘Matriarch’ is faster and the singer can displays her assets (through shouts … a bit like Lee Aaron). ‘Bloodlines’ has a remarkable duel between drum and guitar in the intro and evolves towards a sombre heavy metal track with pretty much growls. ‘Coward’ has guitars layered over the drums while Brittney does her melodic vocal lines (again reminding of Lee Aaron) and though backings and some grunt finish things off. ‘Walls’ is epic in length as well as style, from a softer start to rather grand finale, including a flashing solo. ‘Ten Thousand’ is a pretty nervous track with both clean vocals and growls and splashing solo. ‘Earth’ starts acoustically, but evolves towards one of the heaviest songs, while the riff of ‘Immortal’ is pretty catchy. Finally, Unleash closes with the long title track: quiet intro transiting in chopping drums, again a quiet spell with sensitive vocals, after which things speed up with catchy vocal lines growing to a crescendo finale, quenching slowly…
All in all a fine platter, but nowhere really catchy!

Unleash The Archers bestaat tien jaar en dat vieren ze met hun vierde album ‘Apex’, zo’n twee jaar na ‘Time Stands Still’.
Het lange openingsnummer zet meteen de toon: donderende drums, snerpende gitaar, lange break, grunts naast Brittney’s stem in een snel, melodieus nummer. Catchy ‘Shadow Guide’ is krachtiger en rockt meer, Britney’s stem doet hier een beetje aan Warlock/Doro denken, terwijl ‘Matriarch’ sneller is en de zangeres haar kunnen (via shouts … beetje Lee Aaron) kan etaleren. ‘Bloodlines’ heeft een opmerkelijk duel tussen drums en gitaar in de intro en evolueert daarna naar een sombere heavy metal track met vrij veel growls. ‘Coward’ heeft gitaarlijnen over de drums, terwijl Brittney haar melodieuze zanglijnen doet (weer dat Lee Aaron effect) en stoere backings en wat grunt het zaakje afwerken. ‘Walls’ is zowel episch in lengte als stijl, van de zachtere start tot de vrij grootse finale inclusief spetterende solo. ‘Ten Thousand’ is een vrij nerveus nummer met zowel cleane stem als growls en spetterende solo. ‘Earth’ begint akoestisch en gaat over in één van de zwaarste songs, terwijl de riff van ‘Immortal’ vrij catchy is. Tenslotte sluit Unleash af met het lange titelnummer: rustige intro die overgaat in hakkende drums, weer een rustige passage met gevoelige zang, waarna het zaakje versnelt met catchy zanglijnen en crescendo groeit naar de finale, die dan zachtjes uitdooft…
Goeie schijf, maar nergens écht pakkend!
