OBSCURITY: Streitmacht

In Obscurity we trust! No less than twenty years this five piece hailing from the German Bergisches Land stands proud as a rock in the sea with energetic Viking metal. Without changing too much at the sound or style, German craftwork always reigns on their albums and ‘Streitmacht’ is no exception on that. To emphasize that everything is sung in German language, this eighth studio album smoothly got a German title, while it also focuses on the battle-like nature of their music style. The song ‘Streitmacht Bergisch Land’ may be categorized as blueprint.
Ten compact songs with groove-driven energy are presented to us, with the gravel-tinged throat from Agalaz and the ornamental, melodic guitar skills of Dornaz and Cortez. To complete the two decennia festivities, ancient friends and members Bony and Tim Schuldt did a guest appearance and we can speak of a vigorous and martial album that finds its inspiration in historical as well as mythological subjects. Nothing new under the sun with Obscurity, but executed with loads of conviction and holding on to the old fashioned ways. Sometimes there is no need for innovation and thus we genuinely welcome this successor of the 2014 released ’Vintar’ with open arms. Great band!

Op Obscurity kunnen we vertrouwen! Reeds twintig jaar staat het vijftal uit het Bergisches Land in Duitsland trots in de branding met energieke Viking metal. Zonder al te veel te tornen aan het geluid of de stijl weet de Duitse degelijkheid telkens te zegevieren op hun albums en daarop vormt ‘Streitmacht’ geen uitzondering. Om te benadrukken dat dit alles gebeurt in de taal van de Heimat kreeg dit achtste studioalbum dan maar vlotjes een Duitse titel die meteen ook de strijdvaardigheid van hun muziekstijl beklemtoont. Het nummer ‘Streitmacht Bergisch Land’ mag daarbij als blauwdruk gecategoriseerd worden.
Tien compacte songs met gedreven energie vallen ons ten deel, met de grofkorrelige strot van Agalaz en het ornamentele, melodieuze gitaarwerk van Dornaz en Cortez. Om het feest compleet te maken draven ook nog vrienden Bony en Tim Schuldt even op en kan men spreken van een voortvarend en martiaal album dat zijn inspiratie vindt in zowel historische als mythologische onderwerpen. Niets nieuws onder de zon bij Obscurity, maar wel veel overtuiging en vasthoudend aan het welbekende stramien. Meer moet dat niet zijn en dus sluiten we deze opvolger van het in 2014 uitgebrachte ’Vintar’ graag in de armen. Gave band!
