PROSPEKT: The Illuminated Sky

This British act released their debut ‘The Colourless Sunrise’ in 2013. Two years later, their former vocalist/keyboardist Marshall left. In Michael Morris a new frontman was found with the soaring range and passionate style that the band was looking for, while keyboard player Capriotti expanded the band into a quintet. According to the bio with influences from Dream Theater to Symphony X, I was quite curious.
The bombastic instrumental ‘Ex Nihilo’ opens the album with a mix of film score and heavy prog, after which the title track continues tight, fast and hectic in the same vein, we enjoy some sparkling, shredding guitar and get acquainted with Morris’ voice which fits the music in an exemplary way. ‘Titan’ is tight, melodic and furious with epic finale, while ‘Anamnesis’ is a quiet interlude. ‘Enriya’ is mid tempo, alternates keys and guitar, has a sombre break. Then ‘Earth’ is fast and heavy, a mix of symphonic power and technical skills with a light piano interlude. ‘Discord’ starts with electro before turning complex, reminding Watchtower, where heavy and virtuosity meet. ‘Emissary’ starts with some Yngwie like riffs and turns then towards their familiar complex song writing, after which ‘Akaibara’ is a relatively quiet haven with nevertheless quite chilling vocals. Finally closer ‘Fall’ starts dark and brooding evolving into a monster of complex heaviness, however without being shy of some melody or quiet passages before fading away.
A damned rich heavy prog platter, certainly more daring than the bands they were influenced by!

Deze Britten brachten hun debuut ‘The Colourless Sunrise’ uit in 2013. Twee jaar later stapte hun vorige zanger/toetsenist Marshall op. In Michael Morris werd een nieuwe frontman gevonden met breed stembereik en gepassioneerde zang waar de band naar zocht, terwijl toetsenist Capriotti de band tot een kwintet deed groeien. Volgens de bio met invloeden van Dream Theater tot Symphony X was ik erg benieuwd.
Het bombastische, instrumentale ‘Ex Nihilo’ opent het album met een mix van filmscore en heavy prog, waarna het titelnummer in dezelfde lijn verdergaat in een strak, snel, hectisch jasje, we genieten van flitsende, shredding gitaar en maken kennis met Morris’ stem die de muziek als gegoten zit. ‘Titan’ is strak, melodieus en razend met epische finale, terwijl ‘Anamnesis’ een rustig intermezzo is. ‘’Enriya’ is mid tempo, alterneert toetsen en gitaar, heeft een sombere break. Daarna is ‘Earth’ snel en heavy, een mix van symfonische power en technische vaardigheid met een licht piano intermezzo. ‘Discord’ begint met electro om daarna de complexe toer op te gaan, denk aan Watchtower, waar heavy en virtuositeit hand in hand gaan. ‘Emissary’ begint met Yngwie achtige riffs en gaat dan over naar hun vertrouwde complexe songstructuren, waarna ‘Akaibara’ een relatief rustpunt is met niettemin intense zanglijnen. Tenslotte begint afsluiter ‘Fall’ donker en broedend uitgroeiend tot een complex heavy beest evenwel zonder wat melodie en rustiger passages te schuwen vooraleer rustig uit te doven.
Een verdomd rijke heavy prog schijf en zeker meer gedurfd dan de bands die hen beïnvloedden!
