DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT: Finisterre

With previous album ’Stellar’ (2015), German Der Weg Einer Freiheit paved the path to more international success. The band under guidance of vocalist/guitarist Nikita Kamprad did some intensive touring and thus increased their fan basis all over Europe. The title of the fourth studio album ‘Finisterre’ stands for ‘the end of the world’ and if we think about Cape Finisterre near the Gulf of Biscay, then vast plains where land seems to go up into endless oceans loom up before our very eyes, but of course you can also interpret this as a hint to the critical, rather pessimistic German lyrics as well.
Music-wise the band continues the approach and direction of former albums. The album contains four lengthy compositions of ten minutes length and more, although ‘Skepsis’ is divided in two parts. The strong contrast between scorching black metal with blackened screams and sudden introvert passages is once again masterly crafted in these lengthy compositions, that is why long-winded feels never get a chance and everything has a compelling flow. ‘Aufbruch’ kicks off with a spoken monologue and slow acoustic guitars, before the fury cuts loose. German lyrics make it just a little more grim with this four-piece hailing from Würzburg, but one can already spot many fragments where they slacken down pace and excel in magnificent melodious leads. This creates a soaring and very epic aureole, that’s why this empyrean feel within some of the parts happens to be a strong feature again. Even clean choral chants pop up for a moment. ‘Ein Letzter Tanz’ starts calm with shrill chords, but even during the upper blastbeats they keep having a rather howling melodic style in the leads and guitar skills. This adds a constant melodic zest, in contrast with the fury. The first part of ‘Skepsis’ happens to be instrumental, with equal parts easygoing black metal and softer passages, in the second part they instantly explode with harsh screams and maximum velocity. Yet this second part also includes a nearly doom-like slower finale. The title track offers us more of the same awesomeness and sounds extremely harsh, towards the end they come into quieter waters with even any tasteful orchestral arrangements. And that’s why this album ends with the melancholic timbre of cello. A must have for all post black metal aficionados, with references to Wolves In The Throne Room, Endstille and Imperium Dekadenz, but surely a signature sound of their own. Strong album that will prolong and increase their success!

Met voorgaand album ’Stellar’ (2015) maakte het Duitse Der Weg Einer Freiheit ook de weg vrij naar meer internationaal succes. De band onder leiding van zanger/gitarist Nikita Kamprad hield er een bijzonder intens tourschema op na en vermeerderde alzo zijn fanbase over heel Europa. De titel van het vierde studioalbum ‘Finisterre’ staat voor ‘het einde van de wereld’ en als we even aan Cap Finisterre denken nabij de golf van Biskaje, dan denken we ook aan die weidse plekken waar het land in een eindeloze oceaan lijkt over te gaan, maar dit kan evenzo slaan op de kritische, pessimistische inslag der Duitse teksten.
Muzikaal trekt de band de lijn van voorgaande albums door. Het album bevat vier lange composities van tien minuten en meer, al is ‘Skepsis’ opgedeeld in twee delen. Het sterke contrast tussen verschroeiende black metal met zwartgeblakerde zang en plots opduikende introverte passages is in deze lange composities weer tot in de puntjes uitgewerkt, zodat langdradigheid nooit om de hoek loert, maar alles een meeslepende flow etaleert. ‘Aufbruch’ vangt aan met een monoloog en trage akoestische gitaren, vooraleer de furie ten volle losbarst. De Duitse taal maakt het net nog iets meer bitsig bij dit viertal uit Würzburg, maar er vallen al veel fragmenten te spotten waar men de pas inhoudt en prachtig leads over ons uitstrooit. Dit creëert een zwevend en zeer episch aureool, zodat de verhevenheid van sommige passages weer een erg sterk punt is. Er duiken zelfs even cleane koorachtige gezangen op. ‘Ein Letzter Tanz’ start ingetogen met schelle akkoorden, maar zelfs ondanks de blastbeats blijft men toch een slepende stijl in het gitaarwerk houden. Dit is een constant melodieus gegeven, tegen de furie in. Het eerste deel van ‘Skepsis’ is instrumentaal, met gelijke delen hapklare black metal en zachtere passages, om in het tweede deel woest uit te vallen met screams en snelheid. Toch kent ook dit tweede deel een slepende en haast doomachtige finale. Het titelnummer biedt meer van dat fraais en klinkt bijzonder opruiend, om naar het einde toe toch tot inkeer te komen en zelfs enige summiere orkestrale arrangementen in te zetten. En zo kan het maar zijn dat dit album eindigt met de weemoedige klanken van cello. Een lekkere kluif voor alle post black metal liefhebbers, met knipogen naar Wolves In The Throne Room, Endstille en Imperium Dekadenz, maar zeker een eigen smoel. Sterk album waarmee het succes zich kan prolongeren!
