GALDERIA: Return Of The Cosmic Men

After ‘The Universality’ (2012) comes the sophomore effort from this French band. This second one is more melodic with a lot more variation in singing, because the bass player and the guitar player take part in the lead vocals. Even if the band remains a quintet, keyboards and orchestrations were dealt with by guest musician and country man Peter Crowley.
‘Unity’ opens bombastically and trotting away merrily a bit later with melodic power, adorned here and there with tough backing vocals. They even throw in an epic touch, a piano break and a fine guitar solo. ‘Blue Aura’ is much less intricate and more a straight forward rocker, but has a well crafted break with drum, backings and guitar. ‘Forevermore’ opens acoustically (it wasn’t until this point I noticed the accent of the singer) and has a catchy chorus. ‘Air’ is catchy up tempo power with nice chorus, after which ‘Harmony’ continues in the same vein with acoustic intro and epic touch. ‘Wake Up’ is a decent ballad, while ‘Legions’ rushes speedily along with some though backings in its midst and a bombastic break a bit further. After the title track with its fast bombastic power, ‘Pilgrim’ is another, mainly acoustic, ballad, while the closing track is mid-tempo power with a slight industrial influence.
Far from being original, this ‘Return’ nevertheless is a fine varied platter!

Na ‘The Universality’ (2012) is dit het tweede album van deze Franse band. Deze opvolger is melodieuzer met veel meer variatie qua zang, vermits bassist en gitarist ook een deel van de lead vocalen op zich nemen. Zelfs indien de band nog steeds een kwintet is, werden toetsen en arrangementen verzorgd door gastmuzikant en landgenoot Peter Crowley.
‘Unity’ opent bombastisch en gaat er wat later vrolijk dravend vandoor met melodieuze power, her en der opgeluisterd met stoere backing vocalen. Ze doen er zelfs een snuifje epiek, een piano break en een mooie gitaarsolo bij. ‘Blue Aura’ is veel minder uitgewerkt en rockt meer rechttoe rechtaan, maar heeft een geslaagde break met drum, backings en gitaar. ‘Forevermore’ opent akoestisch (het is pas hier dat ik het accent van de zanger merk) en heeft een catchy refrein. ‘Air’ is catchy uptempo power met lekker refrein, waarna ‘Harmony’ in dezelfde lijn ligt met een akoestische intro en epische toets. ‘Wake Up’ is een vrij goeie ballad, terwijl ‘Legions’ lekker hakkend voortjakkert met wat stoere backings halverwege en een bombastische break wat verder. Na het stevige titelnummer met zijn snelle power bombast, is ‘Pilgrim’ weer een, grotendeels akoestische, ballad, terwijl de afsluiter mid tempo power is met een lichte industrial invloed.
Verre van origineel, blijft deze ‘Return’ een prima gevarieerde schijf.
