REO SPEEDWAGON: Not So Silent Night

This Christmas album by REO Speedwagon was originally released on cd in 2014 but has now been re-released on vinyl with an bonus download card for one song – a re-recording of their own 2010 ‘I Believe In Santa Claus’. Whether you like this kind of seasonal albums or not is a matter of taste and appreciation but it’s always nice to hear one of your favorite bands play their arrangements of well-known classics.
REO Speedwagon is a band with a very distinctive and recognizable sound and so is this album. Kevin Cronin sets his teeth in some traditional Christmas songs like ‘Silent Night’ or ‘Little Drummer Boys’ and lots of others, but there’s also John Lennon’s ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’. We can’t help but finding a lot of these songs rather cheesy, but the band arrangements make up for that and that’s mainly the reason this is still a listenable album. Only for Christmas freaks and diehard REO Speedwagon fans.

Deze kerstplaat van REO Speedwagon zag oorspronkelijk het licht in 2014, maar wordt nu opnieuw uitgebracht op vinyl met een bonus download coupon met één extra song, een heropname van hun ‘I Believe In Father Christmas’ (2010). Bij dit soort platen worden veel wenkbrauwen gefronst en dat zal bij dit album niet anders zijn. We hebben Kevin Cronin al zijn tanden weten zetten in meer opwindend werk.
Sommige van deze songs zijn niets minder dan melig, maar worden dan toch weer wat gered door de instrumentale ondersteuning van de band. Op de afsluiter ‘Joy To The World’ horen we finaal toch nog even de echte REO Speedwagon. Een must voor kerstfanaten – deze band speelt natuurlijk hemels goed – en voer voor de diehard fans van de groep. Wie echter REO Speedwagon wil leren kennen in zijn volle glorie moet op zoek naar ander werk.
