SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE: Vagabond

We really enjoyed the comeback of Subterranean Masquerade in 2015. Their album ’The Great Bazaar’ was different from what we expected, but it offered us a fine combination of Orphaned Land and The Tea Party. That means oriental flavoured rock with loads of room for ethnic influences. Main man Tomer Pink happens to be an Israeli who returned to Israel after living in the US for years. Now he has an eight headed band over there, with Kjetil Nordhus (Green Carnation, Tristania) and Eliran Weitzman as vocalists. Matan Shmuely of Orphaned Land plays drums and Ilan Arad has an important role on flute, sax and clarinet.
This is literally world music, with progressive symphonic overtones. With percussion and eastern guitars ‘Place For Fairytales’ kicks off and the listener is directly invited to join this new musical adventure following on ‘The Great Bazaar’. In a later verse we recognize the melancholic voice timbre of Kjetil. In addition to excellent guitar skills, we hear quite some horns and these sax, clarinet and trumpets are something which is actually not my cup of tea. There are so many guest musicians that the identity of the band happens to be snowed under. Especially so much horns is disturbing me. Every song has a broad musical input and there are many twists and turns. ‘Carousal’ and the longer ‘Daled Bavos’ are instrumental tracks. Now and then some grunts pop up in addition to clean vocals. ‘As You Are’ is beautiful and simple, while the occluding track ‘Hymn Of The Vagabond’ goes from introspective start to wilder outbursts, including any esoteric female chants. Finally we hear a beautiful version of ‘Space Oddity’ from David Bowie and it speaks for itself that this is an amazing song. It illustrates one more time the mundane character of Subterranean Masquerade.

We waren zeer blij met de terugkeer van Subterranean Masquerade in 2015. Hun album ’The Great Bazaar’ was anders dan we verwachtten, maar liet ons een mooie combinatie van Orphaned Land en The Tea Party horen. Dat betekende oriëntaals beïnvloedde rock met veel aandacht voor etnische invloeden. Hoofdfiguur Tomer Pink is dan ook een Israëliër die na een verblijf in de VS naar Israël terugkeerde. Daar heeft hij nu een achtkoppige band, met Kjetil Nordhus (Green Carnation, Tristania) en Eliran Weitzman als vocalisten. Matan Shmuely van Orphaned Land speelt drums en Ilan Arad heeft een grote rol op fluit, sax en klarinet.
Het is letterlijk wereldmuziek met een progressief symfosausje. Met percussie en oosterse gitaren vangt ‘Place For Fairytales’ aan, de luisteraar wordt rechtstreeks aangesproken om dit nieuwe muzikale avontuur na ‘The Great Bazaar’ aan te vatten. In een latere strofe herkennen we de weemoedige, gedragen zang van Kjetil. Naast knap gitaarwerk zijn er ook nogal veel blazers te horen. En dat is iets dat me naderhand een beetje gaat tegensteken. Er zijn zoveel gastmuzikanten dat de identiteit van de band ondergesneeuwd raakt. En vooral de blazers vind ik er teveel aan. Elke song heeft een rijk scala aan muzikale input, zodat er heel wat plotse wendingen in voorkomen. ‘Carousal’ en het langere ‘Daled Bavos’ zijn instrumentaal. Hier en daar duikt een grunt op naast de cleane zangpartijen. ‘As You Are’ is ontwapenend simpel, terwijl de uitsmijter ‘Hymn Of The Vagabond’ van introspectief naar wildere uitbarstingen gaat, met nog wat esoterische vrouwenzang aan toe. Tot slot is er een mooie versie van ‘Space Oddity’ van David Bowie en dat is natuurlijk een song die staat als een huis en het mondiale karakter van Subterranean Masquerade nog eens extra in het zonnetje zet.
