THE GREAT DISCORD: The Rabbit Hole

This ‘Rabbit Hole’ is the sophomore album after ‘Duende’ (2015) and is more accessible than that debut, still retaining their unique sound, completed with the impeccable voice of Fia. Thematically the album presents an alternate twist on the story of Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole by Lewis Carrol. Their sound is labelled in the bio as prog death pop.
The sombre intro is minimalistic instrumental with Fia using the higher chords of her voice. ‘Noire’ has a gothic flavour with some death and is illuminated by the versatile voice of Fia, while in ‘Gadget’ they add some electronic sounds, we get vocal hooks and a slight remembrance of Kate Bush’s voice. ‘Darkest Day’ is sturdier and ‘Heart’ has something nu-metal with industrial beat, but the highlight is still Fia’s voice. ‘Rabbit’ is again a heavy mix of influences, but nor death nor prog, I’d rather label it accessible, even catchy, experimental. After those tracks, ‘Dreaming’ takes us to a quiet haven. For a rather short song ‘Cadence’ contains a treasure of musical twists and ‘Omen’ continues in the same heavy vein. Finally ‘Persona’ delivers another sample of musical wilfulness.
Rather intriguing album with a quite unique sound, which will appeal to open minded listeners!

Deze ‘Rabbit Hole’ is de opvolger van ‘Duende’ (2015) en is meer toegankelijk dan dat debuut, zonder hun uniek geluid te verliezen, afgewerkt met de zuivere stem van Fia. Het album verhaalt een alternatieve versie van het verhaal van Alice (Lewis Carrol) die in het konijnenhol valt. Hun sound wordt in de bio als prog death pop omschreven…
De sombere intro is minimalistisch instrumentaal met Fia die de hogere registers van haar stem verkend. ‘Noire’ heeft iets gothic, met wat death, en is verlucht met de veelzijdige stem van Fia, terwijl in ‘Gadget’ elektronica toegevoegd wordt, er vocale hooks zijn en een vage herinnering aan Kate Bush’s stem is. ‘Darkest Day’ is steviger en ‘Heart’ heeft iets nu-metal met industrial beat, maar steeds met Fia’s stem in de schijnwerpers. ‘Rabbit’ is weer een heavy mix van invloeden, maar noch prog, noch death, ik zou het eerder als toegankelijk, zelfs catchy, experimenteel omschrijven. Na die nummers volgt ‘Dreaming’ als een rustpunt. Voor een eerder kort nummer bevat het vrij catchy ‘Cadence’ een ware schat aan muzikale wendingen en ‘Omen’ gaat verder in die heavy richting. Tenslotte levert ‘Persona’ nog een staaltje heavy eigenzinnigheid!
Nogal merkwaardig album met een vrij uniek geluid, dat eerder de mensen met brede smaak zal aanspreken!
