The next indie/post rock band from the US presents itself, taking the first leaps to success in Europe. We are talking about the Brooklyn-based husband and wife collective Spotlights. The EP ‘Demonstration’ was the first sign of life, followed by their full length debut ‘Tidals’ in 2016. They were noticed by Deftones and a three weeks during tour through the States was the result.
This sophomore album was produced by Aaron Harris (Isis) and you can hear him as drummer on four songs. The duo got also help from Chris Enriquez behind the drums. The band plays extensive compositions with compelling transitions from fragile, introvert passages and voluptuous outbursts. Shoegaze, drone, sludge, doom... you can hear all these influences, but a proper dreamy flavour as well, especially in the hazy vocals which are mixed in the background. It invokes a kind of escapism when listening to it. For example: the title track starts very intimate, but soon furious outbursts take us on a distorted trip. Repetitive patterns create a trance inducing feel, that’s why aficionados of modern post rock/metal will surely like this. The emotive feelings are intense, creating captivating atmospheres prevails. The band has just been booked for Roadburn and they will be at the right place over there.

Een volgende indie/post rock band dient zich aan vanuit de VS om stappen naar succes in Europa te zetten. Het betreft hier het echtpaar Mario en Sarah Quintero uit Brooklyn onder de bandnaam Spotlights. Na een EP ‘Demonstration’ als eerste teken van leven, brachten ze in 2016 het debuutalbum ‘Tidals’ uit en werden opgepikt door Deftones. Een drie weken durende tour door de VS was het resultaat.
Dit tweede album werd geproduceerd door Aaron Harris (Isis) en hij is ook als drummer te horen op vier songs. Het duo kreeg ook hulp van Chris Enriquez achter de drums. De band speelt uitgesponnen composities met meeslepende overgangen tussen breekbare, ingetogen passages en voluptueuze uitbarstingen. Shoegaze, drone, sludge, doom… alles zit er in, maar ook een dromerige tint – vooral dan in de op de achtergrond gemixte zang – die enig escapisme bij beluistering bevordert. Zo opent het titelnummer heel introvert, maar nemen uitbarstingen vol vervorming ons op sleeptouw. Repetitieve patronen creëren een tranceopwekkend gevoel, zodat liefhebbers van moderne post rock/metal hier wel pap van zullen lusten. De emotionele lading is groot, sfeer scheppen staat voorop. De band is zonet geboekt voor Roadburn en daar zullen ze zeker thuishoren.
