SPARZANZA: Announcing The End

This Swedish band is already twenty years together. On ‘Banisher Of The Light’ (2007), their third delivery, they found their signature sound and this ‘Announcing The End’ is already their eight studio album. It was written in Spain and the result is slightly magical, unexpected and extremely professional … at least, that’s what the bio claims!
The title track starts with a sombre intro and takes us on a dark, melodic, heavy grooving journey with alternating scream/grunt and clean vocals (sometimes bringing James Hetfield to mind, in other tracks too), including fine hook. ‘Damnation’ continues in the same vein: dark, pounding, catchy, head banging stuff. ‘Breath’ starts quietly and it’s only halfway the song things turn metal, including a shredding solo. After that quiet spell, ‘Whatever’ follows the same road, but with a catchy hook and a dose of goose bumps as bonus. ‘Vindication’ however is a groovy monster again, pounding, melodic, mesmerising! ‘Dark Appeal’ contains some distorted vocals and hectic passages, but is again darkly grooving hard rock with metal edge, the trademark of Sparzanza, after which the nice ‘Breathe’ is a solid power ballad. The two following tracks are slower paced and less remarkable, but ‘We Are Forever’, with its catchy chorus, keeps me riveted effortlessly from the opening riff on, through rougher passages till the soft fade out, as well as the closer ‘Truth’, with its piano break shifting to a fragile piano outro.
Not a tremendous album, but one you’ll like to give another spin now and then. As I did.

Deze Zweedse band is al twintig jaar actief. Op ‘Banisher Of The Light’ (2007) vonden ze hun kenmerkend geluid en deze ‘Announcing The End’ is inmiddels hun achtste studio album. Het werd geschreven in Spanje en het resultaat is lichtjes magisch, onverwacht en bijzonder professioneel … tenminste, dat is wat de bio beweert!
Het titelnummer begint met een sombere intro en neemt ons mee op een donkere, melodieuze, heavy groovende reis met alternerende scream/grunt en clean vocalen (soms herinnerend aan James Hetfield, ook in andere nummers), inclusief prima hook. ‘Damnation’ gaat op die weg verder: donker, dreunend, catchy, headbanging materiaal. ‘Breath’ begint kalmpjes en gaat pas halverwege de metal kant op, inclusief een vingervlugge solo. Na dat rustpunt is gaat ‘Whatever’ dezelfde kant op, maar met catchy hook en enig kippenvel gehalte als bonus. ‘Vindication’ is echter weer een groovend monster, log, melodieus, hypnotiserend! ‘Dark Appeal’ bevat wat vervormde vocalen en hectische stukken, maar is overigens weer donker groovende hard rock met metal edge, het handelsmerk van Sparzanza, waarna het mooie ‘Breathe’ een stevige power ballad is. De twee volgende nummers zijn mid tempo en minder opmerkelijk, maar ‘We Are Forever’, met zijn catchy refrein, houdt moeiteloos de aandacht vast vanaf de openingsriff langs rauwe stukken tot zijn zachte uitdoven, evenals afsluiter ‘Truth’, met piano break die overgaat in een fragiele piano outtro.
Geen fenomenaal album, maar wel eentje dat je graag eens opnieuw beluisterd. Zoals ik deed.
