SUMMONING: With Doom We Come

Sometimes it is really a delight to escape from reality. Since the nineties, Summoning takes us on a musical journey to Tolkien’s Middle Earth, where shadowy creatures of Lord of the Rings reign, surrounded by enchanting landscapes. The Austrian duo, made up of Protector and Silenius, manages to do this in mostly slow, epic songs of considerable length, averse to any trends. Time after time they succeed in leading you to another world with a wide range of atmospheric sounds, drums like splattering water and pompous melodies. Sometimes any momentous German choirs are added in this case and narrative parts will not leave you unmoved.
However, the music remains rooted into black metal, mainly due to the relaxed storytelling yet bone-crushing vocals of both protagonists. Almost five years have gone by since predecessor ‘Old Mornings Dawn’ came out. Yet the sound of this mysterious duo hasn’t changed at all. And that’s a pro! When you listen to Summoning, it seems as if time stands still, but the music really takes you on an amazing journey through another world. The majestic feeling is top notch class! This is escapism at its best and it really gets a grip on you. A highlight of epic satisfaction and atmospheric beauty. On top of that, it is a relief to listen to in this hectic world, because it has a kind of respectful dignity!

Soms is het bijzonder helend om een vlucht te nemen uit de werkelijkheid. Summoning neemt ons al sinds de jaren negentig mee naar Tolkien’s Midden-Aarde, waar de schimmige creaturen van Lord of the Rings heersen, omgeven door betoverende landschappen. Het Oostenrijkse duo, bestaande uit Protector en Silenius, doet dit in doorgaans trage, epische songs van aanzienlijke lengte, wars van alle trends. Ze slagen er telkens in om je mee te voeren naar een andere wereld met een waaier aan atmosferische klanken, drums als opspattend water en pompeuze melodieën. Soms komt daar nog gewichtige Germaanse koorzang bij en narratieve fragmenten zullen niet nalaten je te begeesteren.
De muziek blijft echter geworteld in black metal, veeleer op conto te schrijven van relaxt verhalende, maar ook door merg en been gaande vocalen van beide bezielers. Er zijn alweer bijna vijf jaar verstreken sinds voorganger ‘Old Mornings Dawn’ uitkwam. Toch is het geluid van het mysterieuze duo amper veranderd. Gelukkig maar! Wanneer men naar Summoning luistert, is het alsof de tijd stilstaat, maar de muziek voert je mee op een betoverende reis doorheen een andere wereld. De majestueuze stemming is een klasse apart! Escapisme van grote kwaliteit durven we dit noemen en het werkt nog ook. Het toppunt van episch genoegen en atmosferische pracht. Bijgevolg een verademing in deze hectische wereld, want het straalt een zekere kalme waardigheid uit!
